Looking forward to reading this, albeit with some sadness. Manchán Magan’s final book, left unfinished at the time of his death this time last year, and published posthumously by @gillbooks.

A publisher’s note explains that the text ends where he left it, and also provides the titles of planned, but unwritten chapters. Music/Sounds - Our Connection to Realms; The Power of Rocks; Ritual Fires; and so many more we’ll never read.

🌀🌀🌀

I picked this up in Sligo yesterday. I don’t visit often, but when I do I always try and pop into @libersligo and I’m so glad I did.

Here’s another of Jim Pilston’s fabulous characters who’s just made his way to Eldon Threads.

‘Old Nick’ is always ready for a bit of mischief by the looks of things.

A dancing devil in vivid reds, in plenty of time for Samhain and Halloween. 😈

As the Autumn Equinox approaches, here comes ‘Mabon Sun’ - part of our new range of Folk Art designs by the brilliant Jim Pilston, adapted from his original papier-mâché sculptures and available now at Eldon Threads.

Jim Pilston Folk Art Collection - link in bio ↑

You’ll find ‘Mabon Sun’ on men’s and women’s T-shirts and our super-soft unisex hoodie, all made from 100% organic cotton and printed using renewable energy. It’s also on a ceramic mug (dishwasher and microwave safe, of course).

The Autumn Equinox is on 23 September this year - day and night are about 12 hours each, and the Sun will rise due east and set due west. Our ancient ancestors may well have marked this turning point in the year - for example, the ‘Equinox Stone’ at Loughcrew is illuminated by the rising Sun around the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes. More ancient monuments are aligned with the Solstices, but it’s hard to imagine people who watched the skies so closely wouldn’t have noticed the moment when day and night were roughly the same length.

Today, many modern Pagans know the Autumn Equinox as Mabon - a time associated with harvest, balance and the turning of the year towards darker months.

We have some incredibly exciting news to share with you today. We are officially collaborating with the brilliant Jim Pilston!

If you’re not yet familiar with Jim’s work, he’s a wonderful Cotswold-based artist and sculptor famous for creating magical, characterful 3D art entirely out of recycled and found materials.

Inspired by folklore, old myths, and 1970s nostalgia, Jim breathes new life into cardboard, paper pulp, and scrap wood to create whimsical gods, monsters, and masks.

The Eldon Threads ‘Jim Pilston Folk Art Collection’ launches today with t-shirts, tops, and unisex hoodies (and mugs!) - each featuring one of Jim’s curious creations.

It’s the Eldon Threads annual directors’ dinner tonight at The Oarsman in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Lovely leek and potato soup to start. James has just discovered they have a beer menu, so there may be no further updates tonight :)

Known as ‘the Stonehenge of the North’, Arbor Low is one of Britain’s most impressive prehistoric monuments - a Neolithic henge and stone circle high in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Our Arbor Low T-shirt is based on an engraving published in James Fergusson’s ‘Rude Stone Monuments’ in 1872.

I came across this 1872 map in James Fergusson’s “Rude Stone Monuments in All Countries” showing ‘probable’ lines of migration of Dolmen builders.

I’m not sure exactly what the current thinking is, but I did also find a much more recent (2019) study “Radiocarbon dates and Bayesian modeling support maritime diffusion model for megaliths in Europe” by Bettina Schulz Paulsson (Google it - it’s fascinating!) which concluded “we have thus been able to demonstrate that the earliest megaliths originated in northwest France and spread along the sea routes of the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts in three successive principal phases.” and “The older generation of archaeologists were correct concerning a maritime diffusion of the megalithic concept. They were wrong regarding the region of origin and the direction of the megalithic diffusion.” There is a nice map in that research, but it only allows for non-commercial use, so I’m reluctant to post it here. But do take a look if you can. It’s super interesting.

As I understand it (and please leave a comment if I’ve got this completely wrong!) - ALL the megaliths in Europe were built by people who probably originated in Brittany, and spread out in waves from there. To be fair, the research does say that Northern France is the ‘suggested’ origin - but it’s quite interesting that the carbon dating puts ALL the earliest megaliths within 200-300 of each other. I think this is pretty amazing. The idea that a group of people first decided to erect a few stone monuments, and over a couple of centuries had spread that idea to other settlements, and over subsequent millennia they had carried the ideas and techniques all over the place! And as we know - in some cases they must have also carried the stones themselves vast distances too. But just the fact that this ALL seems to have started in Brittany is pretty cool.

Just arrived at eldonthreads.com - The Battersea Shield.

Found in the River Thames at Battersea in 1857, the Battersea Shield remains one of the most beautiful pieces of British Celtic art.

Here’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it behind the scenes look at how we created the artwork for print. First the basic line art was drawn using Adobe Illustrator. Next, a glimpse of our secret process (not shown in full!) to adjust the weight of all the lines and add some ‘special sauce’ so the whole thing feels more like it came from the printed page rather than a computer! Colour is added using Photoshop - many many separate layers!

The Battersea Shield is available now, in short and long sleeve T-shirts, oversized tees, and also our popular super-soft unisex hoodie. Visit our ‘Latest’ page for more new arrivals!
