My first-born PERIPATHETIC turns one exactly this day next month! To celebrate, I'll be gossing about it amid adjacent things with good pal, fellow essayist–critic Timmah Ball @electric_zines who will incidentally be visiting from Boorloo/Perth.

For a couple of years now we've shared fairly frequent text messages—in between Timmah's sporadic visits to her old hometown—with one another chatting about books we love & despise plus express our confusion at the strange mechanisms of the publishing industry. I thank her as one of my respected peers in the book's acknowledgements, & particularly as I think about (another respected peer & friend) Max Easton's reflections on what he calls "confluences of interest" (as opposed to conflict) in a review of the collection in the Sydney Review of Books.

Join us! There'll a short q&a sesh afterwards & it'll be so fun to goss & speak freely on a collective level. No alcohol will be available. I will try to set up a livestream for this too, so keep your eyes peeled on that front.

Wed 7 May 6.30PM at Bargoonga Nganjin @yarralibraries

RSVP via link in bio or just rock up! 🫡 PERIPATHETIC: AN EVENING OF GOSSIP WITH TIMMAH BALL AND CHER TAN

Two friends walk into a library. What do they talk about? About books, of course!

Join essayist–critics Cher Tan & Timmah Ball as they chat about Cher's debut book of essays Peripafhetic: Notes on (Un)belonging amidst gossip about the internet, shit jobs, other books, literary culture, and—bonus!—why (some) writers can be so annoying.

Thanks Cher for letting me know about Hoa Pham’s epic genre crossing Empathy which led me to her other novel The Other Shore. Both seem to have slipped from wider recognition which is in no way a reflection of the books and the author ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I loved reviewing these for Meanjin and highly recommended people seek them out! Both are available in Readings and Dymocks or order online through PRH Australia!
