The latest utility impersonation scams are increasingly convincing. A scammer may claim your electric co-op is about to disconnect your service, then demand immediate payment through an unusual method. If you ever receive an unexpected payment request, pause and verify it. Contact your co-op to verify. #cybersecurityawareness by @electriccoops

When it comes to restoring power after a hurricane, the final yards are always the toughest to get.

Line crews from multiple states continued to slog and slash their way into rural parts of the Florida Panhandle to bring co-op members back online in the fourth day of recovery from Hurricane Isaias.

Overall, outage numbers on Tuesday morning served to underscore co-ops’ dedication to turning the lights back on as quickly and safely as possible. About a quarter-million members, mostly in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, had been without power after Isaias made landfall Friday. By early Tuesday, thousands of crews and support personnel had knocked that number down to a little more than 16,000, with all but a few hundred centered in the territory of three Florida co-ops. One day in October 1935, Beauford Johnson composed a letter to the editor targeting all the little weekly newspapers in rural Pine County, Minnesota. He couldn't have foreseen that he was starting a civic bonfire that wouldn't burn out until thousands of Minnesota farms had been electrified.

Today, the co-op that did the job, East Central Energy, serves some 67,000 consumer-members living and working along 8,564 miles of distribution line crossing 14 counties.

Johnson's letter said that the new Rural Electrification Administration (REA) in Washington, D.C. had $100 million to loan to groups of farmers to organize and incorporate electric cooperatives, and—critical in those desperate Depression days—“no lien is placed on the farmer's property" and “the directors are not personally liable."

“Pine County farmers ought to organize in order to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity made available by the government," he continued. And they should act fast “before the money made available is gobbled up by the private utility interests to further their own interests."

Encouraged by the feedback he got from the letter, Johnson, a Pine County farmer himself, called a meeting at the schoolhouse in Rock Creek, and invited J. H. Hay, the state's deputy commissioner of agriculture to speak. Some of the farmers in the audience had already heard his pitch on REA at a fair in neighboring Kanabec County and were eager to hear more details. Link in bio. by @electriccoops

Scammers want you to act before you have time to think. Before clicking a link in an email or text, stop and look closely. Is the message unexpected? Does the website address look legitimate? Is someone pressuring you to act immediately? When in doubt, go directly to the company’s official website or contact them using a trusted phone number, not the information provided in the suspicious message. #cybersecurityawareness by @electriccoops

It's National Co-op Month! ✨
Throughout October, we’ll highlight how America’s electric cooperatives put the seven cooperative principles into action and make a difference in their communities. Stay tuned all month long as we share stories from our Bright Spots series.

🌳 @mohaveelectriccooperative is partnering with local organizations on Operation Cool Shade, a program that helps members defray the costs of shade trees for their homes. Trees cost $9 apiece, and members can choose from three species that can tolerate the Arizona desert heat. Members can also watch an online presentation or attend a local Master Gardeners class for planting tips.

“Trees are a simple investment that can provide years of comfort, energy savings and environmental benefits,” said Courtney Nixon, energy management specialist at the co-op based in Bullhead City. by @electriccoops

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is a great time to strengthen your online accounts. One of the easiest steps? Make your passwords longer. A long, unique passphrase can be harder for cybercriminals to crack than a short password packed with special characters. Choose something memorable but difficult for others to guess, and never reuse passwords across multiple accounts. #cybersecurityawareness by @electriccoops

Last week, NRECA CEO Jim Matheson met with @FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Cameron Hamilton to discuss the critical partnership between FEMA and rural electric cooperatives.

That partnership is especially important when disasters strike. Electric co-ops are on the ground helping their communities recover, making effective federal disaster assistance critical to those efforts. Matheson and Hamilton discussed ways to improve FEMA’s Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs and the ongoing work to reform FEMA.

NRECA continues to work with Congress to advance the bipartisan Fixing Emergency Management for Americans (FEMA) Act to improve disaster recovery for electric cooperatives and the communities they serve.

NRECA appreciates the Administrator’s commitment to improving these programs and look forward to continuing this important work. by @electriccoops

When Hurricane Lowell knocked out power and internet service for days in the remote, mountainous regions of Kauai’s north shore, @kauaicoop CEO David Bissell had just one way to let consumer-members living in the area know what was going on: He went there and met with them in person.

“Communication is so important,” he said. “You’ve got to be transparent in a disaster and tell people what’s happening. They need to know that we’re doing everything we can to get their power back on.”

Although the Category 2 hurricane never made landfall on Kauai, it came as close as 80 miles west of the island late on Labor Day, bringing wind gusts up to 90 mph, dangerous surf, rockslides and a deluge that closed roads and forced more than 300 people to evacuate from homes along the coast. At least two people died as a result of the hurricane, news reports say.
