In NYC? Go to this! - Volt Couture: A Wearables + E-Textiles "Open Mic" is here to celebrate the creativity and passion of all tech+fashion/tech+textiles enthusiasts. We want to see all of the squishy electronics creations at NYC Resistor! Bring high tech and low tech projects. Bring pieces that make people ask, "How does that work?!" or "Is that fashion?

📍When and where is it? Friday, May 23 · 7 - 9:30pm EDT at 87 3rd Ave in Brooklyn

🧑‍🎤Who is this for? This is about fun projects, but it’s also about meeting other folks who are interested in the intersection of textiles + technology, craft + computation, fashion + code. Not sure what all those combinations mean, but still interested or curious? This is for you too!!

💡How do I show a project? Bring your wearable tech and/or e-textile creations, and we'll provide a display card and name-tags. Sign up in advance for prepared materials and a reserved spot, or just drop in and we'll make them on the fly. Note that we won’t have dress forms available! 🔗 in bio

Calling all Portland e-textile and wearable tech practitioners! Come join ETC co-organizer Lara Grant and alum Helen Leigh at @ceti.institute at PSU for two days of making.

Bring a project to work on. We will have some materials on-hand and will demo the tools in CETI's lab for use.

We have decided to take 2025 off. 📣 ETC will not be taking applications this year but plan on hosting camp in 2026. This year we are focusing on satellite events, exhibits, and fundraising. We appreciate the community immensely and, although it's sad we won’t be organizing camp this year, we will continue to post about ETC-connected events that we hope to see you at!

Our website has a new projects page! We have lots of backlog projects to post but to start, we posted all of the @loomia_tech experiments from last year. Check out the page link in our bio for videos, code, and more.

📸 1 - Juice Alert Pressure Sensor by Alexandra Bachmayer. "My experiment was to create an embroidered circuit on an industrial embroidery machine with a DIY pressure sensor as a weight sensor."

📸 2 - LED Pressure Matrix by Linh My Truong. "I experimented with LEDs, fabric printed with thermochromic ink, a heating pad, and a Loomia Mini Soft Pressure Matrix to create a swatch I call Eye in the Sky."

📸 3 - Knitted Pressure Sensor by Alexandra Bachmayer. "This semi-wearable project was a test created on a knitting machine at ETC specifically to fit the Loomia Single Soft Pressure Sensor. "

Loomia generously donated parts and financing to help 2024 happen. We are grateful and had fun experimenting with their products.

With the new year, we are reflecting on experiments done that were made possible by one of our generous 2024 sponsors, Loomia! @loomia_tech
Along with a donation, we received components to experiment with - a pressure sensor and mini matrix. Plus, we already had a serpentine bus in the camp library. Here are some of the participants experiments!

After experimentation with a variety of knit, woven and non-structured fabric, @victoriamanganiello landed on a cotton muslin, mounting the bus on the bias. She wanted to explore how to utilize the stretch capabilities of the design in tandem with the fabric.
Additionally, Victoria explored machine sewing to the traces rather than sewing by hand. With the right stitch selections and conductive thread, she was able to use the sewing machine to cleanly connect to the bus which saved a ton of time and looks clean and tidy!

Knowing that sometimes components need to be swapped out, especially while prototyping, @push_reset experimented with how to keep the pressure sensor removable. She made a small pocket using iron-on fabric to capture and keep the pressure sensor in place. First the pocket covered the activation area, later a window was cut out to expose the area which looked pretty slick. The sensor was able to be smoothly taken in and out of the fabric frame preserving the adhesive back and keeping things modular!

@messinicole did a screen printing demo that involved using computational inks that offer moments of interactivity. The inks Nicole explored react to UV and environment temperatures and include liquid crystal, thermochromic, and photochromic inks.
