Ortuzar Projects is holding the exhibition ‘Carlos and Elsa’ this October with the works of the legendary couple Carlos Almaraz (1941 – 1989) and Elsa Flores (1955 -) as the project explores the husband and wife’s respective practices during the last decade in Almaraz lifetime. The work is curated by Rafael Barrientos Martínez and is a sign of the strength of Carlos Almaraz art that comes with subjects that are still current while also acknowledging the artist that is Elsa Almaraz who is also a pioneer of the chicano art movement. Although I’m not a chicano, as a Brazilian I can identify with many of the subjects portrayed by this couple's artistic sensitivities as they approach not only questions of race and social class but also fantasy and dreams.

From Megan Wong:
So thankful for our beautiful and resilient community! ❤️

Tonight we came together for a community dinner, and it was such a beautiful reminder of what community truly looks like.

A huge mahalo to The Colony for always being so community-minded and for opening up the pool area for us to gather. It was the most beautiful and perfect location for an evening together.

Mahalo to Paulina and her team for preparing all the amazing food, and to her husband Jeff for grilling all the steak that Trinity so generously donated.

Mahalo Bristol for the salmon and delicious salad, Pelika for the dessert and shrimp, and Joëll and Gabi for bringing pop-up tents just in case, a cooler full of food and waters, and for all the helping hands that went into organizing and making tonight happen.

After everything our community has been through, nights like tonight mean so much. Sharing food, talking story, laughing, checking in on one another, and simply being together.

This is what community looks like. ❤️

Everyone bringing what they can, doing what they can, and taking care of one another.

So grateful for this beautiful, resilient community and every single person who continues to show up. Mahalo nui loa. 🤍 by @elekipua

Carlos Almaraz
Untitled, 1980
Pastel on paper, 32 × 46 in.

@carlos_almaraz13 (born 1941, Mexico City; died 1989) was a painter and activist based in Los Angeles and a leading figure in the Chicano art movement. He was a founding member of Los Four, which played a pivotal role in bringing Chicano art into wider public view.

His work fused activism with expressive, often dreamlike imagery, later evolving into the celebrated Echo Park series—paintings that reflect the spirit, memory, and layered identity of Los Angeles.

On view in On the Edge: Los Angeles Art from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection at the @tucsonmuseumofart through May 10.
