Huge congratulations to Michael Govan and his teams at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on their crowning achievement, that is the construction and installation of the new David Geffen Galleries!

We are honored and beyond thrilled to see Carlos Almaraz included in this inaugural installation! LACMA has been the site of many major milestones for Carlos, from his first institutional exhibition in 1974 as a member of Los Four, to his career retrospective in 2017, to today.

Carlos Almaraz
Untitled, 1980
Pastel on paper, 32 × 46 in.

@carlos_almaraz13 (born 1941, Mexico City; died 1989) was a painter and activist based in Los Angeles and a leading figure in the Chicano art movement. He was a founding member of Los Four, which played a pivotal role in bringing Chicano art into wider public view.

His work fused activism with expressive, often dreamlike imagery, later evolving into the celebrated Echo Park series—paintings that reflect the spirit, memory, and layered identity of Los Angeles.

On view in On the Edge: Los Angeles Art from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection at the @tucsonmuseumofart through May 10.

On August 29, 1973 Carlos Almaraz attended a planning session for the United Farm Workers' first constitutional convention to be held later that year in Fresno, California. Also in attendance was Dolores Huerta along with other UFW leaders, who on behalf of the United Farm Workers assisted Almaraz by paying for his final semester at the Otis Art Institute where he received his MFA. For this reason among others Almaraz was a dedicated member of the UFW and was long considered one of the official artists associated with the farmwork movement.

Among the works created by Almaraz for the UFW was the overall stage design for the 1973 convention, represented here by a sketch created during that August 29th meeting. In this initial sketch Almaraz envisioned a monumental mural of protestors flanked by painted banners. On this same page the artist begins to hint at what would transform into an epic battle scene between peaceful labor protestors and angry farm leadership.

This work will be exhibited for the first time in DOLORES, an exhibition honoring Dolores Huerta curated by Glenna Avila and Harley Cortez opening March 19 at Plaza de la Raza’s Boathouse Gallery.

Opening reception March 21.
