I had a great time presenting practical voice care tips for music directors & their students today at Broadway Teachers Workshop! Thanks to Pam Pariseau & Matt Lutz for the invitation & tech set up & for all of the MDs in attendance for their excellent questions & willingness to participate! Thanks also to my super-smart colleagues whom I got to shout out during my presentation: Lucian Sulica & @seanparkervoiceinstitute @rucklesvoice @broadwayvoxstudios #vocalathlete #vocalhealth #broadwayteachersworkshop by @elettrich4voice

Ellen’s Top Tips for Sounding (and Feeling) Ready

🎶 TIP #1 — Start with (Weird) Talking, Not Singing

Talking is your most natural warmup.

- Get up 2–3 hours before your audition and start gently chatting (to yourself, your friends, your mirror... it all counts).

- Everyone has morning voice. Talking helps it move along faster than belting out ‘Defying Gravity.’
- Normal conversation is good. Calling out playful/weird/silly phrases is even better, because it leads easily to singing.

🎶 TIP #2: Bubble Through Your Song

Straw phonation in water = MVP.

Sing your full song with bubbles to check in with high, low, and middle notes, without strain.

Gentle, quiet, and easy to repeat throughout the day.

Pro tip:
Less water = less pressure for head voice.
More water = more pressure for belting. Play with it.

🎶 TIP #3: Don’t Overdo It in the Morning

Audition day isn’t lesson day. No need for a full vocal workout. Just enough to feel prepped and confident.

Keep it light. Save the power for the room.

🎶 TIP #4: Internal Hydration Before

Drink first,then steam or nebulize.

Your vocal folds need internal hydration to do their job, and it takes a couple of hours to kick in.

Match coffee with water (juice counts too!) and THEN start to count your water ounces for the day.

🎶 TIP #5: Reset Between Auditions

Your warmup doesn’t stop once you sing.
In between auditions?

✨ Use straw bubbles
✨ Do a few lip trills or soft hum

Check in with your whole body. Anything feel tight (neck, shoulders, back, pecs, legs)? Stretch it out!

Your voice deserves breaks and tune-ups, just like you do.

Whether you’re the 8AM slot or the last singer of the day, your voice is part of your toolkit, not your enemy.

Treat it with care. Work with it. And remember:

You’ve done the work. Let the work take over. 🎭
