There’s a difference between managing your workload and deliberately slowing things down just to have something to say in the next meeting.

Do your work well. Communicate your capacity. Ask for more responsibility when you have room. And don’t be afraid to finish things early.

Your career should be built around creating value, not creating the appearance of being busy.

As Nigerians, we know how to hustle.

We grew up believing that if you work hard enough, stay busy enough and keep pushing, eventually everything will work out.

But here is something I have learnt: Being busy all the time is not proof that you are living a purposeful life.

You can be extremely busy and still be going nowhere. You can have a great job and still be building a life you don’t actually enjoy.

You can be constantly available to everyone at work while becoming unavailable to yourself and the people who matter most. Look at our British colleagues for instance, they don’t ever miss their annual holidays which they always book several months ahead - to get some time off work.

Relocating to the UK or any other country was never supposed to be about simply surviving another 9-5.

It should also be about creating a life that gives you time to live, grow, contribute, enjoy your family and become the person you came here hoping to become.

Don’t let the pressure to succeed turn your entire life into work. Work hard, yes. But work with purpose.

Because the goal isn’t to look busy. The goal is to build a life that is worth all the hard work.

Base salary for this scheme is £50,000

* You graduated in 2026 or are graduating in 2027 with, or expecting to achieve, at least a 2:1 in a STEM, Economics or another highly analytical degree. We welcome applications from graduates of all levels including Masters and PhD.

If I had to find a mentor from scratch today, I wouldn’t start by asking someone, “Will you be my mentor?” 😂

I’d start by figuring out exactly what I need help with.

Then I’d find people who are already where I want to be, learn from their work, engage with their content, attend events, build genuine relationships and eventually make a specific ask.

And here’s the thing: your mentor doesn’t have to be a big-name executive. Sometimes, the best person to learn from is simply someone who is 3–4 steps ahead of you.

Don’t just look for a mentor. Look for people you can learn from.
