If you’re not putting flies in trees or getting hung up on other structure occasionally, you’re not putting the fly where it needs to go. Get hung up enough, and you start figuring out how to get yourself out of there. Also, remember to work on your backhand. #elevateflycasting #flyfishing #flycasting #castlikeyoumeanit by @elevateflycasting

Sightcasting among the reef and rubble for blue bastards and blackspot tuskfish is a game that demands both skill and luck. You’ve got to make the cast, the fly has to sink down to the bottom without getting picked off by another (smaller) fish, and the fish you want to catch has to turn the right way to see the fly. You can hear my annoyance with a poor cast that, moments later, turns out to be the right cast, partially because I delivered the fly quietly and the fish didn’t notice the surface splash in the breezy conditions.

You need to intuit when the fish has eaten the fly based on body language, not by feeling the strike, and set the hook well.

Once hooked, the fish will try and wrap you up in the underwater landscape. Sometimes blue bastards, like this one, will be confused and give you an opportunity to fight them to the boat for a quick net scoop - that’s what we tried for here, initially - and then if that fails it’s a matter of trying to keep the line up and out of the rocks. Clearing line, circling the boat, keeping up with the fish and making sure to maintain appropriate line angle and tension are all critical, and then the fish is at the boat and in the net. It’s nice when everything goes right, but it usually doesn’t.

Throwback to demonstrating a roll cast at the casting event that @tropicalsportfisher and I partnered up on in Cairns this past May. Looking forward to getting back over there and doing some more of this - what a picturesque place to do some casting eh? Thanks to 📸: @phos.tou.kosmou for the capture. by @elevateflycasting

Me - getting hung up again, as we do - and using a roll cast to get the fly off the stick.

Goal #1: When you first get yourself into this kind of trouble, don’t make it worse by yanking and pulling on that fly. You’ll just drive the hook into the tree - not helping.

Goal #2: We are trying to get the fly line on the opposite side of the stick from our position, to use the energy and weight from the line to pull the fly back backwards and pop it off the stick.

You’ll notice I took a moment and lined up the shot, getting just enough line out to make it past the fly but not so much that it was likely to get hung up on another stick. Then I sent a small, fast loop down the line to pop the fly off. At that point, I felt like I had only minimally disturbed the spot, so I went right back in there a few feet away.

It’s inevitable that we find ourselves hung in cover (that’s where the fish are!), so learning how to deal with that reality is a big part of feeling more in control of your fishing experience. by @elevateflycasting

It’s always that one dang branch that gets us! Also, don’t be afraid to experiment with not only roll casting over your off shoulder, but trying to make different shapes of loop so you can sneak that fly back into places. by @elevateflycasting

The annual Colorado/New Mexico adventure is complete! Saw my good friend @anettecarlisle in Amarillo, spent the 4th with my folks, fished the Conejos and the Pecos, and visited with my sweet friend, Alice, at Los Pinos Guest ranch where I worked as a teenager and rang the breakfast bell.

Special thanks to Austin Orr at @elevateflycasting for the refresher lesson on how to actually fish a river, Micah at @conejosanglers for showing me how to catch lots of trout on the Conejos when the water is SUPER low, and Will at Rio Grande Angler for showing me the Continental Reservoir…and that big brookie!

My sincere apologies to whoever fishes with me next on the Texas Coast. That trout set is burned into my muscle memory! by @elevateflycasting
