Last week we gathered in Portland to celebrate my father, Bill Frerichs, who would have turned 80 on August 5th.

I approached the celebration of life with absolute dread, feeling pressure to speak, to be smart and able to meet his high standards of wit and charm. It was so moving to see so many people assembled to honor him, someone who shirked attention, who much preferred shining a light on other people. I told some stories. I didn’t take any photos, and no one filmed our talks. Poof, off into the ether. Here are a few pics from the slideshow that was looping.

I’m so proud of my family: my incredible brothers Nathan and Fritz, who made us all laugh at just the right times; my brave niece Hazel, now officially our family poet; my Aunt Laura, who definitely has as much wit and charm as her brother; and my wise stepmother Mary-Beth, who shared stories of true love.

I thought the gathering would bring me some sort of closure but turns out it was a false summit. Grief doesn’t abide those predictable arcs. I miss this man so much. He kept me on my toes. It’s hard to know what to do with all the space he’s left behind. 🪶 by @elfrerichs

Hi folks! A @mountainfilm PSA coming at you from Telluride. The fest starts this week, and it’s a proud one for the crew behind @arcteryx film projects: 1 world premiere, 2 directorial debuts, 3 sweet films about 5 of our incredible athletes. Lots to celebrate. If you’re coming to town, holler ! and perhaps check out these films ✨

1 // Teeth to the Wind, directed by Drew Smith and Ben Knight, premieres Saturday. The film celebrates the beautiful friendship between alpinists Michael Gardner and Sam Hennessey, and was made in close collaboration with Drew, Ben, Sam, Elena, and Michael’s family. Brought to you with a lot of love.

2 // Hello, Beautiful, directed by Darcy Hennessey and featuring the fearless Alannah Yip, screens on Friday and Sunday. Alannah schools us with her eloquence and grace on the power of self-acceptance, Darcy and her rad crew mesmerize us with their creative vision.

3 // Fifty-Fifty, the inimitable Angela Percival’s directorial debut, screens Friday and Saturday, and features climbers Sarah Huenekin and Ines Papert as they buck societal assumptions about what it means to get older as an athlete. So many strong women in front of and behind the camera with this one.

4 // And finally, we made a photobook ! Also called Teeth to the Wind, this gem was designed by Cody Haltom, with photos by Drew Smith and a handful of others (Corey Arnold with the perf opening shot of the raccoon aka Mapache). Felt so good to sequence a book with prints all over my living room floor. Drew will have a handful of copies here in Telluride this week, but probably not for long 💫 by @elfrerichs

I’ll be a red-tailed hawk next, you said.

And I think they must have known, the way they swooped and circled the house in the final few days before you left. Ready when you are, they said.

The last thing you said to me with a last spark of knowing, your eyes wide open for the first time in hours: Let’s get out of here! And who could blame you. Hospital beds really do suck, and yours had been here for so long it was creaking and groaning on its own tired bones.

I would have released you if I could, but you found your own way, as you do. The ceiling’s unlimited now, sweet father, you’re free. I hope you’ll swing north for visits to the Skagit. We’ll hunt in the fields, watch over the valley, shoot the shit on the power lines, as they do. I’ll wait for you earthbound, drinking your scotch and collecting your feathers. by @elfrerichs

Friends: Should you find yourself in the Skagit Valley this Saturday 6/29, please join me at the summer rendezvous at Canopy for the group show, CAN’T LOOK AWAY.

I’ll be showing new photo work alongside the greats Maggie Wilder, Allen Moe, Todd Horton, David Neevel (yes!), Peter Rand, Aaron Loveitt, and a musical set in the evening by none other than the amazing Telekinesis. There will also be soup. It will be a good time.

[Shown here: Tulips No. 46. I’ll also have a new water study in the mix.]

Saturday June 29, 3pm-midnight, link in bio for show details. Hope to see ya 🖤 taken in Skagit Valley by @elfrerichs
