“Before Michael Gardner’s death in Nepal in 2024, he and his climbing partner Sam Hennessey had started a film project about their friendship. Remarkable alpinists, but reluctant filmmakers, Teeth to the Wind realizes Gardner and Hennessey’s original vision: a joyful and unassuming glimpse at what they referred to as “the spirit.”

That’s the description of the film Teeth to the Wind, directed by Drew Smith and Ben Knight. Arc’teryx creative director Eugénie Frerichs reached out to me late last year about designing a book to accompany the release of the film.

The book takes a further look at Mike and Sam’s inspired friendship and climbing partnership, told primarily through Drew’s photographs and an essay. Eugenie, Drew, and I worked on the overall direction, edit, sequence and design; we wanted to highlight the range of interests Mike and Sam had, and the fun they had together.

This is a project that means a lot to a lot of people, and it’s an honor to be part of it.

Thank you @mountainfilm for the incredible weekend. Seeing Teeth To The Wind be brought to life here felt like a gift. The team behind this film is truly incredible and so so deserving of the highest of recognition.

The full range of emotions swept through me over the weekend as this project was shared with the world. During which I kept returning to @michaelogardner and his innate wisdom that he always shared.

He used to say, turn your teeth to the wind, especially when we were caught in some sort of wild storm on some mountaintop. When I first asked him about it he said something along the lines of; face the storms head on, don’t turn away just because of the challenge ahead, the wind helps remind you you’re alive.

To me this statement rings true in the ways he lived on and off the mountain. Face life head on, and feel it all; the wind, the storms, the calm that follows, and everything in between.

So through my tears and laughter and all the in between, I spent the weekend facing it all. Attempting to channel Mikey for the strength to be there celebrating his vision come to life without him.

This process of great loss doesn’t get any easier, but it in these moments I do feel it shifting. I feel him more and I know he was there with us, grinning ear to ear at everyone enjoying the film, feeling ‘the spirit’ , and hopefully taking some of that with them after the lights came on.

I’m so grateful for everyone (you know who you are) who stood with me this week. For the warm embraces, the shoulders to cry on, the gift of flowers, and the hands to hold to help me face those gusts of wind. 🦝🥷💜

Eugénie Frerichs

Few have had more influence on my creative aesthetic than my close friend and fellow photographer @elfrerichs. We first met at @nauclothing in spring of '06 where she was art director, and we went on to collaborate on several shoots that both shifted my awareness to the subtle details and also helped me overcome my fear of portraiture. Before then, I was comfortable with shooting adventure and lifestyle through my work for @patagonia and others, but the intimacy of a close in portrait was mildly terrifying.

Through the years it's been inspiring to witness Eugénie and her vision grow with each challenge work or life throws her way. She just recently moved on from her stint as an art producer at @wiedenkennedy to pursue her MFA at Hartford Art School. I'm beyond excited to see the work that comes from this new chapter!
