Introducing our artist-in-residence: Shaan Ken Rao @shaankenraoShaan Ken Rao (b.1995, New York) is an interdisciplinary artist working across photography, painting, and image transfer. Rao received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Parsons School of Design and is part of Pratt Institute Master of Fine Arts in Integrated Practices Class of 2027. His practice is an examination of lived experience, from the inside out. His works have been featured at All Street Gallery, New York, Millennium Film Foundation, Brooklyn, and Le Petit Village, New York. Rao is also the co-founder, creative director, and frontman of band DINHO DINHO, which has played at Mercury Lounge, Bowery Electric, Nublu 151, Nicki’s Unisex, Berlin NYC. Shaan Ken Rao currently lives and works in New York.Working from autobiography without reducing to confession, he constructs images that sit in the difficult terrain between breakdown and reconstitution, probing what persists in a self after it has been taken apart, and what it means that it does. Introducing our artist-in-residence: Tianyi Sun @tianyisun_Tianyi Sun (b.1996, Kaifeng, China) is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York. Working across sculpture, installation, painting, performance, and software, her practice examines the entanglements of technology, language, memory, and embodied experience. Sun received a Master of Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles (2020), a Master of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, The New School, New York (2022), and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Interdisciplinary Visual Arts from the University of Washington, Seattle (2017). Her works have been presented widely in the United States and abroad, including solo and two-person exhibitions and projects at Ars Electronica Festival, Linz; Hyundai Visionhall, Yongin; Helena Anrather Gallery, New York; Shisanwu, Glendale, NY; s+t with JDJ, New York; Artists Space, New York; Bolsky Gallery, Los Angeles; Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle.Sun’s visual language turns everyday objects and technological interfaces into sites of reflection. As she navigates between the virtual and the material, her practice reveals how the human experience is continually reshaped by digital infrastructures. Introducing our artist-in-residence: Clare Hu @clare_hu Clare Hu (b. 1996, Norcross, GA) is an artist and weaver whose practice is rooted in the histories of Chinese American immigration. Hu received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College, New York. She has presented solo exhibitions at Spellerberg Projects, Lockhart, TX; Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC; and Dream Clinic Project Space, Columbus, OH, among others. Clare Hu currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.Working across woven textiles, painting, and stitching, she pulls from overshot weaving traditions to construct fabric surfaces layered with maps, family imagery, and landscape markings. Eli Klein Gallery is pleased to present “Best by 07/21/2026,” a residency-then-exhibition featuring artists Clare Hu @clare_hu (b. 1996, lives and works in New York), Tianyi Sun @tianyisun_ (b. 1996, lives and works in New York), and Shaan Ken Rao @shaankenrao (b. 1995, lives and works in New York)._Residency: July 21 – September 16, 2026 Exhibition: September 17 – October 17, 2026 Opening Reception with the artists: Thursday, September 17, 2026 | 6-8 PM _Working across sculpture, weaving, painting, and photography, the three artists will create new bodies of work using Eli Klein Gallery as their studio. The gallery will be open to the public during normal business hours throughout the duration of the residency. This is an invitation to observe the evolving process of making before the works culminate in a three-artist exhibition opening on September 17. _Borrowing its title from the language of product packaging, “Best by 07/21/2026” considers the systems that determine value, relevance, and obsolescence. We are pleased to share that two photographs by Liu Bolin (@liubolin) have entered the permanent collection of the Pinacoteca di Brera (@pinacotecabrera) in Milan._Created in 2025 as part of “A Message for Beauty”, the works were realized at Santa Maria delle Grazie, the home of Leonardo da Vinci‘s “The Last Supper”, and within the architectural spaces designed by Donato Bramante.Continuing Liu Bolin’s long-standing exploration of identity, memory, history, and cultural heritage, the photographs employ his signature camouflage practice to create a dialogue between contemporary artistic expression and historic sites.Their acquisition by the Pinacoteca di Brera marks another significant institutional recognition of the artist‘s work while underscoring its enduring relevance within both contemporary art and cultural heritage discourse._#liubolin by @elikleingallery

For a long time, when I was young, I felt distant from the idea of “history.” In textbooks, history always appeared through years, wars, reforms, and changes of political power, as if it were made of events already organized and settled. Yet the history that truly remains in the body often appears in more hidden forms. It may be a silence within family narratives, a memory that one generation chooses to avoid, a recurring pattern in festive images, or a color that seems joyful while quietly carrying a wound. In this review, Analeia writes about Here on and after, a solo exhibition by Hanoi-based artist Bùi Thanh Tâm at Eli Klein Gallery in New York. Moving through a dense field of sunflowers, traditional Vietnamese woodblock references, and recurring visual fragments, the review reflects on how images survive not through fixed meanings, but through repetition, displacement, and transformation.Echoing Aby Warburg’s concept of Nachleben, the essay follows the sunflower as it shifts across Tâm’s paintings—from emblem, monument, tower, tombstone, to eye-like presence. Alongside references to Đông Hồ, Hàng Trống, and Kim Hoàng folk woodblock prints, these forms return not as stable symbols, but as living images continually reactivated across time.In Here on and after, survival becomes a process of metamorphosis. We are pleased to share that Shen Shaomin and Miao Xiaochun are featured in “A Glimpse of the Infinite”, the inaugural edition of the Shenzhen Art and Technology Biennale (SATB), now on view at the Shenzhen International Museum of Art (SIMoA). The exhibition was recently highlighted by @e_flux._Shen Shaomin‘s multimedia practice confronts the brutality of human nature through kinetic bone sculptures and hyperreal ”sleeping“ figures, probing the line between the real and the artificial. In this exhibition, he presents a collaborative work with Liu Shaoshan, Shen Tongyi, and Jiang Suxuan. Miao Xiaochun, a leading figure in Chinese new media art, is known for digitally reimagining Western masterworks, from Michelangelo’s ”Last Judgment“ to Bosch‘s ”Garden of Earthly Delights“ by replacing their figures with virtual models of his own body.Their works join over fifty international artists, scientists, and researchers exploring the quantum condition of perception. In Mutant II (2019), Bùi Thanh Tâm (@bui_thanhtam) depicts a transforming body enclosed inside a geometric cage, the figure held at the threshold of becoming.
