Ten years of dreaming, and this book is finally real! I grew up listening to my grandmother talk about her childhood surviving World War II, then growing up under an unkind stepmother in Hong Kong. She dreamed of being a singer, of continuing her education, and of so many other things that she couldn’t have. So she made a new life for herself in America.

Fishbone Cinderella is inspired by her story and the Chinese version of Cinderella. It’s a multigenerational family saga about a girl who discovers she can turn invisible when the Japanese invade her hometown. At its heart, it’s a story about mothers and daughters through the trials of war and immigration, and love and loss with a shimmer of magic. It’s also an ode to my Cantonese roots, how my family ended up in America, and a reflection on what it means to be seen even when you’re far from home.

I’m so proud for this book to reach the hands of my readers, and I can’t wait for you to discover it!

It is with great delight that I unveil the cover for FISHBONE CINDERELLA!

When I was a new and unpublished author, a piece of advice stuck with me: “Write what you want to read.”

There are two genres I grew up adoring and they are fantasy and historical fiction – especially multigenerational stories with messy family drama. Well, I’ve done a few of the former and I’d been itching to write a historical novel inspired by my grandmother’s life, but it took years before I felt I had honed my craft well enough to do the story justice. Now, Fishbone Cinderella is finally here, and I could not be happier or prouder of what it achieves. While the contents are yet to be uncovered by you, dear readers, I hope you will agree that the cover is gorgeous!!

🎨My deepest thanks to Lilitt Wang @lilittwang, the brilliant artist, for envisioning then rendering the perfect face for my book. I’d been hoping for a cover that was both enchanting yet also heartfelt, and as you can see, she nailed it. I must also thank Regina Flath @reginaflath, our art director and jacket designer, for her keen eye and tremendous framing for FISHBONE CINDERELLA!

A Cinderella retelling? I’m so there. A Cinderella retelling that as I’m reading I become so lost in that I FORGET it’s a Cinderella retelling? I’m SO there!!!

If you’re a writer, @elimpix ‘s masterful storytelling in this book is required reading. If you’re a reader who enjoys experiencing a character’s lifelong growth and how their past trauma informs their choices and how their children help them heal from it (and a little bit of magic), then this book is required reading.

Happy one month to Fishbone Cinderella!! I can’t believe this book’s been out for one whole month. Thank you thank you to everyone who’s been reading and talking about it. I know a multigenerational family saga touching on intergenerational tension and mother-daughter love is pretty different from my past books, but this story was so important for me to write and I couldn’t prouder that it’s out.

My bookshelf collection is complete now, thanks to the UK edition (also, I had the most amazing time meeting my London readers and hanging out with @ay_chao) and I’m excited to share more about what’s next soon…

I’m also pleased to share that my grandma signed a handful of bookplates and those will be going to @yuandmebooks this week, so if you want one, pls make a note of it at checkout on their site!!
