One of the highlights of my time in Saitama was experiencing Hibiki, a Japanese Taiko group.

Taiko is incredibly powerful individually, but the performance really comes alive through the connection between everyone playing. Each person has a role, but no one seems separate from the group. They’re constantly listening, watching, adjusting, and feeling the rhythm together. At different moments someone takes the lead, others support, and then those roles naturally shift.

Everyone has to do their part well, while also staying connected to what everyone else is doing.

It reminded me of what I enjoy about being part of a good team. You work hard to develop individually, but over time you also learn how to read each other, support each other, and contribute to the group. 🥁🇯🇵響 by @eliotkelly

🇯🇵 Ando Momofuku’s path to success was anything but straightforward. He experienced war, postwar food shortages, business failures, and even lost nearly everything after a credit union he supported collapsed.

He was 48 when he finally created instant ramen.

Working from a small shed behind his home, Ando experimented for months until he developed Chicken Ramen in 1958. More than a decade later, a trip to the United States inspired another idea: CUP NOODLES 🍜

Behind his inventions was a philosophy shaped by what he had witnessed in postwar Japan:

Combat Label Summer Development Camp 🤼‍♀️ Lecture Series: An athletic career has a beginning, highs and lows, and eventually a transition but the person continues to grow.

As coaches, our job isn’t only to prepare athletes for the next competition. It’s also to help prepare them for what comes next.

One practical tool for doing that is the GROW Model:

G: Goal
Where do you want to go? What does success look like?

R: Reality
Where are you right now? What strengths, challenges, and obstacles exist?

O: Options
What different paths could you take? What haven’t you considered?

W: Will / Way Forward
What are you actually going to do? When will you do it? How will you stay accountable?

The model shifts coaching from always giving athletes answers to helping athletes find their own answers.

This connects strongly with the work of sport psychologist Dr. Dan Gould, whose research on coaching and athlete development emphasizes developing the whole person through leadership, life skills, self-regulation, and personal growth alongside performance (1st picture).

A few questions worth asking ourselves as coaches:

Am I solving problems for my athletes, or teaching them how to solve problems?

Am I preparing them only for their next competition or for the next stage of their life?

Thank you to Dr. Shimizu Seshito @seshito for his continued commitment to athlete development and for challenging us to think beyond performance and consider the entire journey of the athlete. by @eliotkelly
