As I was making images of a land for my thesis work, a land based on Puerto Rico but ultimately closer to a place that only exists in my mind and memory, I found myself wanting to protect them as I put them out into the world.
In Puerto Rico, the word rejas refers to the intricate ornamental metalwork in windows and doors. Hybridizing influences from Spanish architecture and African traditional ironwork, rejas are objects of beauty as much as protection. Taking inspiration from the form and function of rejas, I found it also came to symbolize the barriers of time, language, and distance between me and my Puerto Rican culture.

This piece is an exploration into the ways that beauty and protection can be interconnected. It considers how the things we find most beautiful are often those built to keep something safe, and how the act of protecting something is, in itself, a form of devotion. by @elisa.dore

Puerta de Tierra
site-specific woodcut collage and metal installation for SITE at the Goat Farm

Puerta de Tierra is an exploration into the ways that beauty and protection can be interconnected. In the Spanish Caribbean, the word rejas refers to the intricate ornamental metalwork in windows and doors. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks at @hambidgecenter working on getting back to a place of creativity without expectations. What a gift this place is. Thank you especially to @gawomeninthearts for selecting me for a Distinguished Fellowship and making it possible to attend Hambidge.

I still can't believe it's up and these years of working, learning, changing, and growing have come to fruition. Here it all is in one room.
Birthmark will be up until April 30. I'm planning to do an artist walkthrough at 2pm on the 30th. Until then I rest :~) by @elisa.dore

The one month countdown to my thesis show opening has begun. Birthmark is a collection of printmaking, sculpture, and installation that considers the ways in which places mark us and impact our identities. In this body of work I'm exploring printmaking as a metaphor for migration, displacement, and rootedness. I am so proud of this work and thankful for all of the help I've received along the way.
