Do you love the person you see in the mirror?

On my good days, I look in the mirror and like the person I see. On my bad days, I look in the mirror and hate the person I see.
On most days, I look in the mirror and am both sad and proud of the person I see. I don’t know the last time I loved the person I saw, though.

I sometimes don’t know if being vulnerable as a man has actually served me. Sometimes it has felt like more of being taken advantage of, or not fitting in anywhere. I’ve also been in relationships where I was told vulnerability was what they wanted, but it ended up not being the case. I’ve fought it for a long time. I’ve accepted it’s who I am now, but that doesn’t always feel like a good thing (while I also know it’s a good thing).

Starting a series of poems where I respond to Taylor Swift’s songs. This is the first one, a response to her first song, Tim McGraw. Enjoy!

Poem:

Tim McGraw (Responses to Taylor Swift #1)

I never lied to you -
when I said I got lost in your eyes so blue,
I’ve never said anything so true.
And now my mind gets stuck
like my old Chevy truck
on the memory of your wavy hair,
waving in the backroad air,
it’s all I see
everywhere.

Now I can’t listen to Tim McGraw.
The words hit too clean and raw
because you’re the only time my heart saw
happiness.
It’s more than that little black dress,
more than your head on my chest.
Everything just feels like
emptiness.

September found me midnight awake
haunted by memories I could not shake
of us dancing under the moon,
and maybe if you were still here,
you’d see I could fill a lake with my tears,
wishing we could go back to June.

Now I can’t listen to Tim McGraw.

because you’re the only time my heart saw
happiness.
It’s more than that little black dress,
more than your head on my chest.
Everything just feels like

I got the letter you left at the door.
It’s all ache, but I want more.

There’s something wrong with my brain. Whenever I heard the term “blood moon” I think about the moon menstruating. I did wake up at 3am to go look at it. It was pretty.

I never thought my daughter being proud of the book I wrote would make me feel like I’m doing something right. As a father, I’m constant worried I’m doing the wrong things. Maybe, once in a while, I actually do something right.

The writer’s relationship with the blank page can be so toxic. Mine definitely can be. But when it works, it’s such a beautiful thing! I guess that can be a metaphor for most things where the work is really dependent solely on us - our dedication, commitment, work ethic, inspiration, desire, etc. Which explains why it’s so hard for me! 😁

This one is a little late. My four year old is amazing. We tried forever to have a second kid, and a month before we were going to stop for good, my wife got pregnant. How lucky we are.

Happy Birthday to the Little One

She’ll put up two fingers on each hand
to tell you that she’s four.
And it doesn’t matter how many Oreos she’s had,
she always wants more.
Half the time she thinks she’s a princess,
her regalness second to none,
other times she’ll slay a demon
to show you how it’s done done done.
Cream cheese is her favorite food group,
hide and seek her favorite game,
and by that I mean misplacing her favorite stuffie
then finding someone else to blame 😁
She will ask “Are you happy to me?”
if she thinks she made you mad,
and is quick to give you the biggest hug
if she thinks you might be sad.
She loves to ask Alexa
to play an Imagine Dragons song,
and no matter how tired you are,
she’ll inspire you to dance along.
She treats the world as her coloring book,
her hues so strong and bright,
happy birthday my Finley Jax,
I love you - now please sleep through the night.
