This Maternal Suicide Awareness Week, we’re reflecting on the reality that suicide is the leading cause of maternal death between six weeks and one year after pregnancy.

According to MBRRACE-UK, different care may have changed the outcome for 64% of women who died by suicide.

A birth doesn’t have to be medically complicated to be traumatic.

A new analysis led by researchers at the @uniofeastanglia is drawing attention to an important gap in postnatal care: childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is estimated to affect 4.7% of postnatal women, yet there is currently no established assessment tool for CB-PTSD in UK primary care.

CB-PTSD can involve re-experiencing the trauma, avoidance, hypervigilance, and changes in thoughts and mood that persist for at least a month. Previous trauma, existing mental health conditions and inadequate support can increase risk, while high-quality maternity care, effective communication and support during pregnancy and birth can be protective.

Recognition matters. Research cited in the analysis found that although half of GPs recognised trauma-related features when presented with cases describing CB-PTSD, postnatal depression was their most common diagnosis. The distinction is important because the recommended treatments differ.

The authors are calling for more research into how CB-PTSD can be better recognised in primary care, alongside greater clinician education, evidence-based assessment and clear pathways to specialist support when needed.

Better maternal care starts with recognising what women are experiencing, including what may not be immediately visible.

Paul is an applied AI scientist and engineering leader with experience spanning automated reasoning, decision-support systems, and drug discovery. He earned a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Liverpool, following a BSc in Computer Science.

Together with @pandaschiswick, we recently spoke to 50 women about their experiences of NHS maternity services with a focus on mental health and wellbeing in the perinatal period.

The strongest theme was that the women we interviewed felt their concerns weren’t recognised, followed up, or acted upon. At Ellescope, we’re exploring how earlier visibility of mental health, social, and clinical risk factors could help create more opportunities for timely intervention and support.

When critical context is missing, risk assessment becomes guesswork.

Maternal care cannot be proactive if the information needed to understand a patient’s full history isn’t accessible, synthesised or usable.

Meet Temitope Ajileye DPhil MSc, our Founding AI / Data Lead.

Temitope has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Oxford, preceded by an MSc in Mathematics and Computer Science, from Oxford also. In his doctoral research on information systems, he developed AI algorithms for automated reasoning in distributed knowledge bases and has led a team building systems for decision capture at Exscientia. He was previously a Fellow at Schmidt Futures.

At Ellescope, he builds intelligent AI models that analyse patient data to identify risk patterns and support better clinical decision-making.
