💭 Feeling invisible to the doctor responsible for her care awakened Sandra Nwokeoha’s redemptive imagination. Instead of pointing fingers at individual providers, Sandra was inspired to address the systemic healthcare issues at play. She built @ellescope, digital maternity platform that empowers clinicians with data to see their patients more clearly. It took Sandra some time to find the connection between her work as a biomedical engineer and the healthcare challenges she felt firsthand. What opportunities might exist at the intersection of your own skills and the needs right in front of you? “We have gifts and talents that are in us so that we would use them … to change our environments, redeem people, restore lives.”

Even as high rates of maternal deaths and morbidity persist, the majority of maternity staff in England lack the information they need about patients’ mental health and risk factors. Sandra Nwokeoha saw this gap firsthand working in one of the UK’s most deprived regions. NHS staff were struggling to identify which patients needed the most support, and mothers were falling through the cracks. Sandra founded @ellescope to give clinicians a more complete picture. Their MpRisk tool pulls together clinical data, mental health information, and social factors to predict which mothers face the highest risk at every stage of pregnancy—allowing for earlier interventions and better outcomes. We are inspired by Sandra’s work ensuring every mother, regardless of race or background, gets the care she needs, and grateful to have Ellescope in our 2026 Business Accelerator. In the UK, suicide is a leading cause of maternal death – often linked to unemployment and domestic violence. Black women, in particular, face worse maternal mortality. Yet, maternal health screening tools only focus on medical risks. With @ellescope, Sandra Nwokeoha has developed a novel screening tool to address this. Pics by @benoit_ga
