Knozz-Moe-King - Wynton Marsalis

I’ve had the pleasure of playing music with Wynton Marsalis for the last two decades, but this was the first time I’d ever played this tune.
Knozz-Moe-King is such a classic that when Wynton goes into it, we usually let him do his thing with the rhythm section.
Earlier that evening, the tune I was supposed to solo on was cut from the setlist in the middle of the show. Then, as we were walking offstage at the end of the concert, Wynton turned to me and asked if I wanted to come back out for the encore.
We stepped back onstage... and he launched into Knozz-Moe-King.

The past few days in the studio were very special, filled with love, joy, and pure creative energy.
The energy, swing, grooves, improvisation and musical decisions were infused with that spirit.

Elliot Mason is one of the most celebrated trombonists of his generation. An internationally acclaimed trombonist, composer, educator, and bass trumpet specialist, he has spent more than twenty years performing with the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and regularly appears with the Wynton Marsalis Septet.

A native of England, Elliot began performing professionally as a child and went on to earn a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where he received some of jazz’s most prestigious awards. Since moving to New York, he has become one of the most sought-after trombonists in contemporary jazz, performing with legendary ensembles including the Count Basie Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, and the Maria Schneider Orchestra.
Elliot has shared the stage with an extraordinary list of artists, including Paul Simon, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Joe Lovano, and many more.

In addition to his performing career, Elliot serves on the jazz faculty at The Juilliard School, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of jazz musicians.
With his unmistakable sound, breathtaking technique, and fearless improvisation, Elliot Mason brings a truly world-class voice to the stage. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of jazz’s finest musicians live.

“Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy,” says Pulitzer Prize-winning composer @wyntonmarsalis. At a time when America—and indeed, the whole world—found itself at a crossroads, Marsalis was inspired to write a poignant and buoyant work, "The Democracy! Suite," which proves that the joy and beauty of jazz can bring us all closer together.

Recorded in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room during the Covid-19 lockdown, the suite is out now on Blue Engine Records featuring Marsalis and a septet composed of members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

“The question that confronts us right now as a nation is, ‘Do we want to find a better way?’” Marsalis asks. The music of The Democracy! Suite may be instrumental, but it speaks for itself, urging us onto action—to get out of our seats and fight for the world we believe in.

Tonight (2/7), the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with @wyntonmarsalis conclude their weeklong residency at the University of Michigan with a performance at Hill Auditorium.

Next week, the Orchestra continues on their final leg of tour:

2/11 - Schermerhorn Symphony Center (Nashville, TN)
2/12 - Auburn University, Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center (Auburn, AL)
