In 2025, when @elmanpeace Centre added breakfast and lunch to the school day at their primary school in Mogadishu, the reasoning was simple: children too hungry to concentrate couldn’t learn. The effects went further than that.

Most children at the school come from the Elman Peace orphanage or from families displaced more than once. For them, the meals also meant a routine they could count on. Teachers noticed the children arriving earlier. The rooms were calmer. Lessons ran with fewer interruptions.

Elman Peace Centre is now working to make the project sustainable, building relationships with local suppliers and Somali businesses so no single funding cycle decides whether a child eats.

“I believe creating and protecting that kind of ordinary consistency for children is some of the most important work we are doing today in Somalia,” says @ilwadelman, Aurora Prize Laureate and Chief Operating Officer of Elman Peace Centre.

This is what Aurora Prize Laureate @drdenismukwege chose to fund with part of his $1M award, selecting Elman Peace Centre as one of Aurora’s participatory grant recipients: direct, trust-based support that gives local leaders what they need to build impact that lasts. by @elmanpeace

🥳Congratulations to @fartunabdisalanadan our Executive Director 💐recognized by the African Women Leaders Network #AWLN Somalia Chapter in partnership with @unwomen @africanunion_official for her years of service, courageous advocacy for women’s rights, enduring contribution to peace, security & the leadership of Somali women.

For decades, Fartuun has helped shape some of the most important conversations about peace, justice, and inclusion in Somalia, not only as a leader, but as a convener who has consistently opened doors for others to lead.

This recognition comes at an important moment for #Somalia As the country continues to navigate change and opportunity, the need for principled, courageous, and visionary women leaders has never been greater!

We celebrate Fartuun, and the remarkable community of women leaders standing alongside her, whose collective leadership continues to strengthen Somalia and inspire the next generation.

After a week of deep immersion into the Hope TVET College in #AddisAbaba before formalizing the new @elmanpeace @undpsom @lg_global & @officialkoica I’m finally back home in #Mogadishu 🇸🇴 ❤️☺️☺️

Still so inspired & charged up from the exciting next steps we have ahead 🙏🏾

The willingness to share knowledge openly, abandoning competition or institutional silos in exchange for building together across borders was truly the highlight for me ✨

And this is exactly the kind of collaborations the future & #Africa ‘s youth demand. public-private partnerships, long-term investment, practical opportunity, regional learning, and the belief that when young people thrive in #Africa we all WIN together.

A lot more to come. Stay tuned & drop a 🇸🇴 in the comments to get involved! taken in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by @elmanpeace
