The IRC Somalia and Elman Peace partnered to organize a human rights center football and basketball tournament. These tournaments were part of the Somali Women and Youth Peacebuilding Project (SWYPP), a United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (UNPBF)-funded initiative promoting peacebuilding and conflict management at the community level across different locations in Somalia.

Here, we highlight the energy and spirit of young Somali girls and boys as they compete in basketball and football. This tournament, which took place earlier this year, represents a youth-led approach to peacebuilding and social cohesion. Our aim was to convey hope and resilience, demonstrating how young Somalis are leading the way in creating a more peaceful future for their communities while strengthening social cohesion and preventing future conflicts.

This is someone who inspires me❤️ A huge congratulations to @elmanpeace for receiving the 2022 @king_baudouin_foundation africa prize 🏆 Elman Peace is named after its founder, Elman Ali Ahmed; an ardent and pioneering peace activist, remembered to this day as the Somali Father of Peace. Elman and his wife, Fartuun Adan (pictured next to me here) ran the organization together until the war worsened in #Somalia 🇸🇴, and they made the decision to split up; Elman would stay behind and continue to fight for peace and Fartuun would flee the country for the safety and future of their daughters 🙏🏾 Elman was assassinated on March 9th, 1996, but Fartuun is continuing the fight, with the help of her daughters. This latest honor is a tribute to their fighting spirit 💥Never give up ✊🏾

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Fartuun Adan and @ilwadelman from @elmanpeace .

“Elman Peace is a non-profit organization, founded in 1990 and is dedicated to promoting peace, cultivating leadership and empowering the marginalized brackets of society to be decision makers in the processes that ensure their wellbeing.”

As a young Somali woman, it was very inspiring to see the wonderful work and advocacy happening back home. We are often only told about the narrative of our homeland being “war torn.” For most of us born in Canada, this is something that has@held us back from exploring and connecting with our roots. The reality is, there is so much life, innovation, heart, hustle and hope. Learning through the eyes of @elmanpeace was very uplifting.

In discussing mental health, the wonderful @ilwadelman highlighted that the approaches to mental health may not look the same for everyone. In fact, the traditional forms of “therapy” and “counselling” may not work for all individuals. It was fascinating to learn that the organization has adopted yoga, meditation and surfing as holistic approaches to mental health for the community. That is what it is all about! Doing what works for you and your community!

It was also nice to hear from the Honourable Minister @ahmeddhussen who did a great job highlighting the work of @elmanpeace .

Thank you @king_baudouin_foundation and @globalpluralism for coming together to host this event. It was a pleasure being in the room and connecting with you all.

Such a lovely day!
