Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Brown History Month Forum honoring the Young Lords and the legacy of Black and Brown communities organizing together for health, dignity, and survival.

Through a screening of TAKEOVER: The Young Lords by Emma Snyder, followed by a conversation with organizers who lived this history, we reflected on the power of young people to organize, challenge systems, and mobilize their communities around the issues that matter most.

From fighting for healthcare and basic necessities to building community-led systems of care, the Young Lords and Black Panther Party remind us that organizing is about more than resistance. It’s about showing up for one another, meeting community needs, and building collective power. Sometimes, that starts with something as simple and powerful as breaking bread together, creating space to connect, share experiences, and strengthen the bonds that sustain movements.

Their history is our blueprint. The tradition of young people organizing, communities breaking bread, and neighbors fighting for one another continues right here in Corona. 💛

Recovery Month was filled with opportunities for connection, education, healing, and meaningful conversation. In collaboration with the @louisarmstronghouse and Re-Entry Theater of Harlem, Elmcor participated in the second cohort of the Justice Arts Program, alongside participants from @phoenixhousesny. Participants transformed their experiences into theater, spoken word, poetry, and visual art, culminating in a powerful final performance.

The C.O.R.E, our youth recovery clubhouse, hosted a Recovery Awareness Event featuring youth-led conversations, harm reduction education, interactive activities, and hands-on creative projects.

Together, these experiences highlighted the many pathways to recovery while creating space to learn, share, connect, and reduce stigma around substance use and behavioral health.

We’re proud to announce Leyla Bermudez as our Vice President of Quality and Impact! 💙

Throughout her tenure at Elmcor, Leyla has led our Youth Recovery Clubhouse and Drug Prevention Education programs, helping young people build the skills, confidence, and opportunities to become leaders in their communities. She has also been instrumental in securing and licensing our Free Universal Pre-K program in Jamaica.

With 20 years of experience leading DYCD-funded programs before joining Elmcor, Leyla brings a strong foundation in education, family support, and youth development. She also helped establish the Queens Prevention Community Coalition, advancing community-driven solutions for immigrant communities and communities of color.

In her new role, Leyla will lead data collection and evaluation efforts across Elmcor, turning insights into stronger programs, greater accountability, and meaningful, measurable change for the individuals and communities we serve. Please join us in congratulating Leyla as she steps into this exciting new role! by @elmcor
