Homage to the Rectangle

Inspired by Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square, I’ll be leading a workshop at the Elmhurst Art Museum celebrating the familiar rectangular shape of the book cover.
We’ll play with color, experiment with arrangement, and layering.

Take a look through my collection of discarded book covers and find the perfect one that reflects your interest and personality.

Here’s the challenge: use the whole cover in your design and create a composition within its rectangle.
You’re welcome to make as many as you like—time and inspiration permitting!

LECTURE: Abbott Pattison: THE FIGURE FORWARD
Thursday, November 12, 6:30-8:30pm

Join us for a lively evening of learning and conversation with EAM’s Manager of Exhibitions & Collections, Liz Chilsen, curator of our current McCormick House exhibition Abbott Pattison: The Figure Forward.

Pattison was a prominent figure in mid-century modernist sculpture, with over 30 large-scale artworks commissioned and installed throughout the area. He was born in Chicago where he lived and spent most of his career. The Museum holds 15 of his artworks.

Pattison’s unique blend of representation and abstraction found significant expression in the human form. The exhibition, drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, showcases the breadth of Pattison’s expression, from classical figuration to bold, textured abstraction, with works in cast and carved bronze, carved stone, and drawing, dating from 1960 to 1980.

Liz will share her recent research and lead a conversation about this prominent mid-century modernist Chicago Sculptor.
