GENERAL MOTORS : THE STORY

PART 2 of 2

(Story continued)

Tame was low on paint, whereas my stash of spray cans had grown significantly following a recent escapade to Adelaide for a bounty of PlastiKote, Berger and Killrust. After seeing his sketch, a work of precision, I knew it would need an assortment of colours to do it justice. I pledged as many cans as necessary in exchange for a spot on the train. Graciously, he agreed. We would have to make our own way there and produce a window-down whole car.

Friday nights were always the most perilous for writers commuting on the trains. The network was infested with transits, both in uniform and undercover, as well as pissed and stoned bogan louts. Our work was cut out and the risk was high, as we’d have to get from the outer Hursty line all the way back into Jolimont, walk past the MCG and through to South Yarra, avoiding both transit hot spots of Flinders and Richmond, to then make the dreaded last route along the feared and hostile Dandenong line, all with a huge and suspicious sack of cans. We began to feel like a living embodiment of the movie The Warriors.

It was a risk worth taking. The tracks past Dandenong were industrial and barren with no guarantee whatsoever that there would even be a train. The final leg was full of anticipation with apparitions of emerging trains in the distance turning out to be nothing more than a mirage. It was this final mirage however, that with every step became clearer and clearer, before we both saw it: a lone Bluey in the darkness. We turned in relief, blood boiling with excitement. Hand signals notified the comrades, heads eventually popped out of the carriages — it was the other boys, and the game was on.

(End of story.)

GENERAL MOTORS : THE STORY

PART 1 of 2

Amongst the writers there was a deep affection for the aging Blue Harris trains. Their distinct blue colour and luxurious flat panel sections offered the most premium of canvases and backgrounds. The smokey brakes and open doors when in transit added to the windswept charm. By 1989, due to an ageing fleet and asbestos, they were all taken out of service and dispersed through the network’s storage yards, awaiting eventual scrapping.

Word swept through Richmond one day that one of these Bluey sets had been spotted heading through the south-eastern corridor. Mystery surrounded where it could have gone, with one person’s account that it was at the outer old service track of General Motors. There was no guarantee it was there, but this didn’t stop immediate planning of an entire night’s painting session, possibly the whole train. The original lineup included the kings: New2, Duel, Prins, CM3 and Tame. It would require persuasive badgering to crash the party and get in on the mission.

My mate good guy Glenny got me to make him a Puzle panel Pop Art archival print. It was his vision and influenced by a Chalfant NYC print he owns. The brief was simple; curate a set of old panels, preferably ones with characters, and colour scheme them to match, with a halftone look. Green & Yellow felt right, referencing the old Met livery. Came up pretty neat. What do you think 🤔 by @elzup

Peril has an incredible Hip Hop and Graffiti archive of the pioneering Australian 80s. Pictures of people, pictures of pieces, the original outlines and amongst many other things this absolute time machine, a Central Station Records 1988 music chart - If you didn’t hear these, you weren’t listening!👂

Read his quote as to what Hip Hop meant to him and many others. PURE GOLD 💯👑

This was the Golden Era of Hip Hop and Graffiti in Australia. The CLAIM 2 FAME book is full of it. There’s not many copies left. Get one now before they’re all gone.
