Soft skin, softer energy.
So grateful to be part of this campaign with @harlowskinco , a local brand rooted in sustainability, simplicity, and care.
Wellness, to me, is about what we choose to surround ourselves with. What we put on our skin is part of that story. 🌿✨. #harlowskinco

Breathwork and meditation have become a grounding part of my self-care routine by helping me slow down, reset, and come back to myself.

I’ve also been loving the movement-based workouts on Open, including yoga and Pilates-inspired flows, to support both my body and mind in a balanced way.

Grateful to be partnering with Open to share this with you šŸ¤

I thought I was listening to my body. I was actually negotiating with it.

I got a new job and wanted so badly for it to work that I started explaining away everything that didn’t.

The $45K salary.
The long commute.
The workload.
The racial microaggressions.

I kept telling myself I should be grateful. That I could adjust. That maybe I was just being sensitive.

Meanwhile, my sleep was changing. My period was changing. My mood was changing. I was becoming a version of myself that had no energy left for anything else.

And I think fawning played a role in that.

There’s a particular kind of survival that teaches Black women to be adaptable at our own expense. To make ourselves comfortable in places that were never built with us in mind. To call overextending ourselves resilience.

I’m learning that listening to my body also means listening when the answer is: this is not sustainable.

I’m not walking away without a plan. I’m making one.

Because I know the difference now between being grateful for an opportunity and being afraid to admit it isn’t enough.

We’ve inherited a lot of information about the menstrual cycle without necessarily inheriting the language to understand it.

So much of what we call ā€œnormalā€ is really just what we’ve gotten used to working through.

The Body Literacy series is about paying attention to what the body is already communicating, before every sensation becomes something to suppress, fix, or push past.

During menstruation, that might mean changing the way you move.

Not because the body is fragile.

Because it isn’t the same all month.

I’ve had to learn that moving forward doesn’t always feel like moving forward.

sometimes it’s small. sometimes it’s messy. sometimes you’re literally just crawling your way through it.

still counts.

You can move on with your life and still be angry about what happened.

Those two things can exist at the same time.

This flow is for that

I’ve been sitting with the idea of resentment lately.

Not resentment because I think other people don’t deserve good things, but resentment because sometimes I look at the lives people get to live and realize how much of that ease was never available to me.

There are people who can make mistakes, change their minds, take risks, be spontaneous, fall apart for a little while, because they have people or resources to catch them.

I’ve never really had that luxury.

I’ve had to be intentional. I’ve had to plan. I’ve had to think three steps ahead because there were times when nobody was coming to clean up the mess if everything fell apart.

And I think there’s a particular kind of grief that comes from realizing how much of your personality was shaped by survival.

I can be proud of what I’ve built and still wonder who I might have been with more support.

I can be grateful and resentful at the same time.

I can understand that life is unfair without pretending that the unfairness didn’t hurt me.

Maybe the work now is learning that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life preparing for the next shoe to drop.

Maybe I can finally start building a life where I’m not just surviving it.

This is your reminder that movement can change with your cycle.

During my luteal phase, I reach for a slower 45-minute stretch on @open to help ease tension, regulate stress and give my body some space to soften. Research suggests yoga and regular exercise can help reduce overall PMS symptoms, including pain, mood changes and stress.

So if you’re in your ā€œI need to slow the hell downā€ phase too… save this for later. šŸ«¶šŸ¾

Sometimes the pressure to make a fresh start work out, can make you forget that you’re allowed to actually settle into it.

Learning that slowing down doesn’t mean I’m falling behind. Sometimes it’s the only way I can hear what’s actually going on with me.

Just a girl and her locs.

The story they tell and the energy they hold.

I may not be happy with the overall structure of my locs right now, but when I really think about it, this hair has been with me through some of the hardest seasons of my life. Stress, survival, healing, starting over. It was all there.

Lately I’ve been repairing damage, removing lint, combining a few locs and learning to let go of the idea of ā€œperfectā€ hair. It’s not where I want it to be yet, but it’s stronger than it was before, and so am I.

I’m grateful I still have my hair. I’m grateful I get to keep caring for it. This journey has taught me that growth isn’t always pretty, but it’s still growth.

One day I’ll look back at this stage and realize it was just another chapter.
