Another familiar face it’s time you properly met 👋

If you’ve been into the clinic, chances are you’ve already crossed paths with Em, but we thought it was time you got to know her a little better.

Em is one of our senior physiotherapists, with a special interest in shoulder health, something she understands firsthand after navigating her own shoulder challenges over the years. What she loves most about the job is meeting people from all walks of life and helping them get back to doing what they love.

In the treatment room, that means a collaborative approach - tailoring every plan to the individual and meeting you where you’re at. And with a background in psychology, she understands how pain affects both body and mind, not just the injury in front of her.

Outside the clinic, you’ll usually find Em at the gym training CrossFit, a passion that keeps her connected to the athlete mindset and helps her understand what it takes to stay active, even while managing an injury.

Whether you’re a high-level athlete, a casual gym-goer, or a busy parent juggling work, kids, and an aching back - Em’s firm belief is that no one should have to “just put up with” pain.

Toughen up is not a coaching strategy.

I got alot of comments on my previous post saying sometimes it's not the athlete pushing too hard, it's the coach. And you're right.

I've treated multiple athletes from the same gym who shared a similar story. They all waited too long to come in out of fear of telling their coach something was wrong.

There's a difference between a coach who pushes you but can shift gears if they need to, and one who constantly dismisses and silences you.

So here's me, just putting it out there that better is out there 🫡

When they say "Crossfit wrecked my body" it makes my blood boil.

By both being in the sport and being a physio long enough, I've seen the pattern. The little niggles that constantly flare up and settle back down. The athletes who can't say no to all the upper body accessories even though their shoulder is screaming at them for a little rest 😂.

But truly it's not Crossfit's fault. It's how you're approaching your training. (There's also a version where we can discuss proper programming but let's save that for another day).

Your body can actually hold up doing this. And still compete if you want. But it requires something a lot of competitive individuals find difficult, which is trusting that doing less but executing with quality is better than doing more poorly.

I'm not immune, I learnt this the hard way too.
But you can stay in this sport for a long time (that's what it's meant for).
You just might need to tweak your volume a lil.

If you're training hard enough, you should feel like you NEED rest days.
It doesn't mean you're soft, but the adaptation that we're striving to create happens during the recovery.

If you feel like you struggle with rest days, maybe that's where you should put some focus.

1/ sleep, relative rest and stress management
Top tier these are the first things you should be looking at if your body is not feeling 100%. Sleep is where all the good stuff recovery wise happens and can't happen while we're awake. Similarly, you need to address workload or private life stressors and have good stress management tools!

2/ nutrition and hydration
Making sure we are well-fueled at all times gives our body the resources it needs to recover from training. Being underfueled increases injury risk.

3/ training schedule / load management
Proper training schedules that increase reasonable, has recovery days and is progressive is key. Along with this, when managing external life load, training should be down-regulated to adapt and complement.

4/ muscle recovery techniques
I'm a big a fan as anyone on massage/dry needling/self-massage/normatecs - they make me feel good and limber. However these things won't have much longer term effect if the above 3 aren't dialled.

5/ everything else.
Sauna/cold-plunge/supplements - as long as they feel good and don't take away from big ticket recovery (don't skip sleep for that sauna) then these things are perfectly fine to add in. Just understand their limitations in preventing injury risk if the previous considerations are missed!

Have any questions?
Drop them below 🫶🏼
