~ Moments from March ~

A dear friend, Manoela, planted a seed of collaboration with one of my favorite artists ever, Vincent Moon (@petites___planetes). In Mexico City at @teatrolucido, he live mixed his footage for 12 hours, collaging the imagery of humanity he has filmed everywhere around the world. This long, fascinating and captivating artistic ritual felt like ceremony where Vince shared glimpses of life on this planet - the traditions, art, and culture that sustain life. Over the hours, he invited many musicians to the stage in improvisation with the film and sound he was sharing. This experience still feels surreal to me. I’m so grateful @openyoureyesfilms captured this and made Manoela a center part of the performance with the art of her movement.

Just in time to celebrate ~ happy birthday @manoelabosworth. Thanks for your love, tender heart, adventurous spirit, and devotion to art.

Years have passed since I’ve shared a personal note! As of late, I’ve been spending 2 months in a small town in Mexico to take some musical inventory after receiving the Austin Live Music Grant! It’s been a time of big life changes and growth personally, and waves of inspiration and grief have come through the rains and rushing rivers of this place. I’ve never felt closer to the sky, making the wildest storms I’ve ever seen feel part of both my inner and outer worlds. This place has brought the elements clearly into the frame, helping me find my way through the fear, confusion, and transformation. It’s been a gift of presence to hear new melodies, write, refine and piece together years of voice memos. I spent a month exploring home recording with @philipweinrobe at @school_of_song (highly recommend). Though recording my own songs still doesn’t feel like my superpower, he shared the metaphor of a Japanese Enso, a fluid sweep with devotional intention, as a philosophy that can translate into the recording experience. Even though part of me loves trying for the “perfect” takes, using a metronome, headphones, blah blah, the Enso concept shined a light on simplifying, centering my focus enough to track a song entirely and embracing the raw imperfection of what is moving me in the moment. So, experimenting with that and I still don’t know what this album will become, but if it includes parts of what I’ve recorded here, it’ll have the essence of barking dogs, thunder, fireworks, and whatever else. All that said, I am tending to many new songs and excited to start sharing them <3 mucho mucho amor by @emiliebasez

Here’s a note from me, Emilie, about the tender story of the song and the way it has again brought me to humbly remember the seen and unseen threads of interconnectedness that create the profound embroidery of life.

I submitted a song to @songconfessional contest a few months ago. It’s a beautiful project inviting musicians to write songs in response to an anonymous confession about anything and everything. This confession featured a moving story told about losing their father to a terminal illness and the mystical nature of staying connected to loved ones who have passed and the beauty of acceptance within the challenging process of letting go. It inspired me to wrap up a song I started writing about my brother and guardian angel. It was a fun challenge to finish writing and practice home recording. After @walkerlukens told me the song won and would be recorded live at @kutx, I thought about it for a while, like until 5 days before the recording… and thought what a dream it would be to have my very talented friends to record the track, live, one take.
