“Other Side” is out now! Recorded live in Studio 1A at KUTX featuring the very talented @michaellongoriadrums on drums, @spamkey on bass, and @fearsontheinternet on trombone. Recorded and mixed by @intrepidaudio . Photos by @seanson28. Link to listen in bio <3

Here’s a note from me, Emilie, about the tender story of the song and the way it has again brought me to humbly remember the seen and unseen threads of interconnectedness that create the profound embroidery of life.

I submitted a song to @songconfessional contest a few months ago. It’s a beautiful project inviting musicians to write songs in response to an anonymous confession about anything and everything. This confession featured a moving story told about losing their father to a terminal illness and the mystical nature of staying connected to loved ones who have passed and the beauty of acceptance within the challenging process of letting go. It inspired me to wrap up a song I started writing about my brother and guardian angel. It was a fun challenge to finish writing and practice home recording. After @walkerlukens told me the song won and would be recorded live at @kutx, I thought about it for a while, like until 5 days before the recording… and thought what a dream it would be to have my very talented friends to record the track, live, one take.

Thankyou friends for being my friend 🫶🏻

Over the years I’ve let my lack of capturing most moments keep me from sharing many moments. Anyone else?

Well I’m getting over it!

Here’s just one of so many magical musical moments from our show last night at the @thequillroom…me and @emiliebasez singing this sweet ol’ Bob song. Funny cause @magey.mage Mage was like “I’m going to have Daniel up to sing a Bob Dylan song…” and I was like “I’m gonna have Emilie up to sing a Bob Dylan song!” We almost picked the same song but didn’t. Bob was in the room. More clips to come. Thankyou @kirby.dream.land for capturing the momentitos. Thanks friends for coming out! More clips to come

“My Joy” performed live by Gene Evaro Jr., with additional vocals from Emilie Basez and Kate Robberson.

Finished this in September 2024 and never shared it here.

I filmed this and 3 other live music videos on this shoot day with Gene and other super talented vocalists and musicians. We’d only planned to shoot 2 videos, but after we broke down all the lighting gear and packed up most of the instruments and audio gear, I offered to try and grab 1-2 more videos that were really stripped down because we still had some time. This is one of those additional videos.

I’m very detailed with my pre-production, and part of my motivation for that is actually to allow for improvisation and experimentation. Being prepared and knowing exactly what you need allows you to ensure you get the required shots efficiently and identify moments where you can allow for creative play and find something unexpected. Sometimes things go wrong and that additional time goes toward racing to the finish, but oftentimes that doesn’t happen for me. In this case, we wrapped early because we were all very prepared, which gave us time to play.

I love these moments. I love going into something and not fully knowing if it will work, then seeing it working. Seeing spontaneous and raw and vulnerable acts of creation become a beautiful piece of art right before your eyes, and being able to share that moment with others. Those experiences are one of the aspects of photography and filmmaking that make me fall in love with the mediums again and again.
