250 years and still the greatest experiment in self-government the world has ever seen! 🇺🇸

There’s a lot to celebrate this year. As we celebrate our Constitution and America’s 250th, I’m especially grateful for the people who make this country and our state such a special place. I’m also incredibly thankful for the continued support, friendship, and encouragement from so many of you.

Welcoming Justice Samuel Alito to Utah today, who swore Justice Jorgensen into the Utah Supreme Court.

24 years ago — Jay Jorgensen, Mike Lee, and I were all young associates at the DC office of Sidley Austin. All three of us had offices along the west hallway of the 10th floor … and little did I know how our personal and professional paths would continue to cross again and again.

I almost feel a little bit sheepish posting this picture, because it is me … and three of the sharpest legal minds in the country.

Apart from my professional work with now (Senator) Mike and (Justice) Jay … I can’t tell you how grateful I am for the friendship that Emilie and I have with both of them and their amazing wives, who as anyone who knows them will tell you, are truly as brilliant as they are.

Both of these men have marriages that exhibit partnership, respect, unity, and love. And frankly, that’s what I admire most about the Lees and the Jorgensens—even more than their professional accomplishments.

Justice Jorgensen — the newest member of the Utah Supreme Court!

Jay and Melissa Jorgensen have been friends of Emilie and I for many years. In fact, Jay was instrumental in recruiting me to Sidley & Austin in DC, my first legal job after my federal clerkship.

Jay and I both clerked for judges on the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit— Jay clerked for Judge Alito before he was placed on the Supreme Court.

Jay also clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist when he was the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Jay’s career has been anything but a typical cookie-cutter type legal career that you often see. He litigated with Sidley & Austin for 15 years, was an Executive Vice President of Wal-Mart, took a company public in Korea, served with Melissa as mission presidents for the LDS Church in Chile, and then worked in house for the church in the office of the General Counsel.

Apart from a stellar and diverse legal career, he was also raised in a family of sheepranchers in Ioka, Utah (which is in Duchesne County).

The newest member of BYU’s Vocal Point!

Emilie and I literally couldn’t be more excited to announce that our Zak was accepted into BYU’s acapella group Vocal Point!

His older brother Alex was the beat boxer for several years, and now Zak will be the bass—where this year they will tour places like the Philippines. Keeping up the family tradition!

For the Brown Family — this is like getting a starting position on BYU’s football team — but way, way, cooler!! 😂😉

For Constitution Day, my own Utah community gathers and celebrates this incredible document.

I was honored to give the keynote address, and talk about the genius of the Constitution.

I spoke about one of my favorite founders — Francis Lewis, who signed the Declaration, and shortly afterwards had British soldiers descend on his home in Long Island and decimate it. They also took a prisoner — not Frances himself, but his wife Elizabeth, who was in her 60’s. The British soldiers imprisoned her, and treated her terribly, and she later passed away, in part, because of what she suffered.

Sometimes we don’t realize the real sacrifice of our Founders — and, of course, their families — to bring about the political environment in which our country could both declare independence and the existence of God-given rights, and later establish a legal structure in which those rights could be protected.

I never get tired of talking about this heritage, and it is my mission to make sure that the next generation understands this amazing legacy. by @emilievo

It was an honor to participate in our neighborhood patriotic celebration last night. Derek gave a beautiful speech in including the moving story of John Quincy Adams AFTER he served as presiden, and about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and how we are all part of forming a “more perfect union”. I sang our arrangement of My Country Tis of Thee and my dad, Lex de Azevedo’s patriotic anthem, Hymn to America. Of course, @derekebrown accompanied me on the keyboard. 🇺🇸❤️🎶🇺🇸 We are so blessed to live in this great country. Happy Constitution Day! @derekebrown @deazevedolex by @emilievo

Talking aviation — with my favorite pilot!

Just kidding … we actually talked about the roughly 5,000,000 people who will tour the Salt Lake Temple during this coming year.

President Uchtdorf serves as the Chair of the Salt Lake Temple Executive Committee.

For 25 weeks next year, the Salt Lake Temple will be open to the public for the first time in 135 years.

There will be thousands of volunteers and the magnitude of what will be taking place will be massive. Recently, 1,000,000 tickets were released to the public, and they were snatched up almost immediately.

Having never met President Uchtdorf before, I can attest that he and his amazing wife Harriet are every bit as delightful in person as they are from a distance.

It’s always so wonderful to meet someone that you have admired from a distance and realize that they are just as authentic, real, and inspiring in person as they are from a distance. by @emilievo

A two-day whirlwind at Dallas for the Mid-Term Convention.

While it was fun hearing from speakers, Emilie and I mostly loved spending time with the 60 or so Utahns who made the trip to Dallas.

@robertaxson and the Utah Republican Party did an incredible job hosting the delegates, providing meaningful opportunities to interact, like hearing from Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum.

Emilie and I were only there for about 36 hours, but it was an eventful, memorable, exhausting 36 hours! by @emilievo
