Lauren, a single birthday seemed insufficient, so we’re turning this into a year-long celebration. Think royal jubilee, with fewer constitutional restraints. You spend so much time loving everyone else. I hope you’re feeling every bit of it coming back — and letting yourself enjoy it.

For all my running around the world, the best part is always coming home to you and our kids. You’ve built an extraordinary life and a beautiful home, which is impressive considering how much of your time goes toward supervising our family. Somehow, you also get more beautiful every year despite prolonged exposure to me. There should probably be a study.

I love your heart, your laugh, and the look you give me when I’m about to say something you’ll have to explain later. I love how much fun we still have together. Seeing you surrounded by people who make loving you look as easy as it is just felt right. So let the festivities begin, my Bad Mama Jama. This next chapter looks good on you. Really good ;)

When in St George …

Jerry Jaeger — our Washington County Attorney — and his wife Stephanie do a fantastic presentation on keeping kids safe in our modern world.

They give this presentation to school, civic, and church groups and it is fantastic. Jerry knows what he is talking about, as he has prosecuted some of the most difficult and gut-wrenching cases involving children here in Washington County (as well as working in LA early in his career).

We are lucky to have such incredible public servants here in Utah like Jerry.

I appreciated the opportunity to speak with the Washington County Republican Women about what the Utah Attorney General’s Office is doing to protect Utahns.

Could not be more excited about UVU’s new President! We enjoyed getting to know Jon and Kristy Anderson at The President’s Scholarship Ball, as well as several of their children who were there as well.

Jon is a dynamic leader, academic, and the right person to take UVU to the next level. I look forward to working with him in the years to come!

BYU’s new Arts Building is now open, and it is incredible.

Emilie and I spent literally thousands of hours as students in the old Harris Fine Arts Center as students, and even since then, which we all affectionately called the HFAC.

Music, performing, theatre—the arts. We loved joining President and sister Reese for a walk through of this incredible building which will serve generations of artists for the decades to come.

I am now more convinced than ever that in the years ahead the arts will be more critical than ever to understanding and preserving what is most important about humanity. This building will be one of those where it happens.

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the St. George Tabernacle for an interfaith fireside and celebration of America in song.

Our family and @lex.deazevedo were honored to share music and a messages about America, celebrating our heritage and 250 years.

Thanks to the Crimson Cliffs Chamber Choir who also joined us and made the night exceptional!

Can people still trust their government? That’s what I talked about with BYU students today, and I loved their answers.

I was honored to join the Ballard Center for Social Impact at BYU. We talked about trust in government: why it’s eroded, why it matters, and what it takes to earn it back.

My take: trust isn’t restored by speeches (ironic, I know … 😉). It’s earned by being transparent, keeping your word, and being willing to say “I was wrong” when you are.
What impressed me most were the students. Their questions were sharp, thoughtful, and honest, which is exactly what good government needs more of.

Thanks to Professor Steven Fox for the invitation!

250 years and still the greatest experiment in self-government the world has ever seen! 🇺🇸

There’s a lot to celebrate this year. As we celebrate our Constitution and America’s 250th, I’m especially grateful for the people who make this country and our state such a special place. I’m also incredibly thankful for the continued support, friendship, and encouragement from so many of you.

God bless Utah, and God bless America!

Welcoming Justice Samuel Alito to Utah today, who swore Justice Jorgensen into the Utah Supreme Court.

24 years ago — Jay Jorgensen, Mike Lee, and I were all young associates at the DC office of Sidley Austin. All three of us had offices along the west hallway of the 10th floor … and little did I know how our personal and professional paths would continue to cross again and again.

I almost feel a little bit sheepish posting this picture, because it is me … and three of the sharpest legal minds in the country.

Apart from my professional work with now (Senator) Mike and (Justice) Jay … I can’t tell you how grateful I am for the friendship that Emilie and I have with both of them and their amazing wives, who as anyone who knows them will tell you, are truly as brilliant as they are.

Both of these men have marriages that exhibit partnership, respect, unity, and love. And frankly, that’s what I admire most about the Lees and the Jorgensens—even more than their professional accomplishments.

I’m lucky to have had such great friends and mentors through the years, and there is just nothing greater than seeing a friend succeed in their quest to make the world a better place.

Justice Jorgensen — the newest member of the Utah Supreme Court!

Jay and Melissa Jorgensen have been friends of Emilie and I for many years. In fact, Jay was instrumental in recruiting me to Sidley & Austin in DC, my first legal job after my federal clerkship.

Jay and I both clerked for judges on the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit— Jay clerked for Judge Alito before he was placed on the Supreme Court.

Jay also clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist when he was the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Jay’s career has been anything but a typical cookie-cutter type legal career that you often see. He litigated with Sidley & Austin for 15 years, was an Executive Vice President of Wal-Mart, took a company public in Korea, served with Melissa as mission presidents for the LDS Church in Chile, and then worked in house for the church in the office of the General Counsel.

Apart from a stellar and diverse legal career, he was also raised in a family of sheepranchers in Ioka, Utah (which is in Duchesne County).

Jay is one of the smartest and most delightfully positive people I have ever worked with, and Utah is lucky to have him as one of its newest justices.

The newest member of BYU’s Vocal Point!

Emilie and I literally couldn’t be more excited to announce that our Zak was accepted into BYU’s acapella group Vocal Point!

His older brother Alex was the beat boxer for several years, and now Zak will be the bass—where this year they will tour places like the Philippines. Keeping up the family tradition!

For the Brown Family — this is like getting a starting position on BYU’s football team — but way, way, cooler!! 😂😉

Way to go @zakthebrownie!

For Constitution Day, my own Utah community gathers and celebrates this incredible document.

I was honored to give the keynote address, and talk about the genius of the Constitution.

I spoke about one of my favorite founders — Francis Lewis, who signed the Declaration, and shortly afterwards had British soldiers descend on his home in Long Island and decimate it. They also took a prisoner — not Frances himself, but his wife Elizabeth, who was in her 60’s. The British soldiers imprisoned her, and treated her terribly, and she later passed away, in part, because of what she suffered.

Sometimes we don’t realize the real sacrifice of our Founders — and, of course, their families — to bring about the political environment in which our country could both declare independence and the existence of God-given rights, and later establish a legal structure in which those rights could be protected.

I never get tired of talking about this heritage, and it is my mission to make sure that the next generation understands this amazing legacy.
