Not every week is going to be sunshine and rainbows ☀️🌈

Some weeks will challenge us more than others, while others seem to fall into place effortlessly. But at the end of the day, I continue to show up for the people who matter most in my work: my clients.

Even on my hardest days, they remain at the forefront of my mind. I show up for them. I show up to help them navigate their challenges, experience breakthroughs, discover things about themselves they may have never recognized before, and realize their own strength and potential.

Being a social worker is not an easy job, and let’s be honest, most of us aren’t in it for the money. We do this because we care. Because we believe in people, even when they struggle to believe in themselves. Because we want to help individuals grow, heal, overcome obstacles, and become the best versions of themselves while finding success in all areas of their lives.

But remember: we can’t pour from an empty cup 💗

Give yourself grace on the hard days. Celebrate the little victories, acknowledge the weight you carry, and remember that you deserve the same compassion you so freely give to others.

And above all, ALWAYS make time for yourself and your own self-care. You matter, too 🫶🏻 by @emillyduffley

@emillyduffley is sharing her story with us today! She is on the women’s lacrosse team at Simmons University (@simmonslacrosse). In her story she talks about how her coaches were a source of support in the midst of significant trials, how various injuries affected her physically and emotionally, and how she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in social work while using up her eligibility. Emily, your perseverance is remarkable. So glad you’re here! Thanks for sharing💙

Happy World Mental Health Day! 💚🌿

A reminder that mental health matters, asking for help is a sign of strength, and no one has to navigate their struggles alone. Let’s continue breaking the stigma, showing compassion, and making space for honest conversations about mental health 🫶🏻

✨ New Tattoo Appreciation ✨

Finally put the idea to fruition! For years, I have been wanting to have my mother’s and father’s handwritten I LOVE YOU permanently engraved into my skin. Two and a half weeks ago, I put the sketch together with help from my one of my closest friends, and made it happen.

Originally, the idea was to simply put their handwriting on my arm, but then I decided to add in the sunflower. The sunflower represents strength, the ability to persevere in harsh environments and remain standing tall despite challenges thrown at them 🌻

Whenever I’m struggling, I can look down at my arm and remind myself of the two people who supported me throughout my worst. The journey isn’t over yet, but it gets easier every day. by @emillyduffley

World Suicide Prevention Day 💛

No matter how many years, months or days pass, I will always recognize this day, as it means more than anything.

No matter how much time passes, I still reflect on my “rock bottom.” To truly believe that the world would’ve been better without me, seems crazy at this point in my life. But it’s true - that was my belief.

I attempted to end my life 3 times.

No matter how dark my world got, I continued to smile. Hid what was actually going on deep down. I never let anyone see just how miserable I truly was, and didn’t want them to know because I didn’t want them to stop me.

I’m glad they did.

As hard as it was for me to believe 10 years ago that life would get better, I’m happy that I stayed around to see that it did. I wouldn’t be where I am without my support system. I wouldn’t be where I am without surviving. I wouldn’t be where I am without having the inner strength to overcome to inner demons that were tearing me down.

If you’re having thoughts of hurting yourself - talk to me. Talk to someone. The world is a much better place with you in it. I promise that.

This was written from the heart - if it sounds cheesy, it probably is. But do I care? Nope! Because saying it how it is - the most important. by @emillyduffley

🤍 Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

As a social worker, I am passionate about raising awareness surrounding mental illness and the many mental health challenges individuals face every day. During the month of May, however, the world comes together to shine an even brighter light on these very real experiences and to support those who are struggling.

For the past 13 years, I have personally struggled with anxiety and depression, in addition to surviving sexual abuse and navigating the effects of trauma. Throughout that time, I have engaged in self-injurious behaviors, specifically cutting, and have survived three suicide attempts.

Sharing this is not easy, but it is important. Mental health challenges do not discriminate, and no one should feel ashamed to seek support.

If you are currently struggling with your mental health or facing challenges that are impacting your daily functioning, here are a few steps that may help:

✨ Seek individual therapy, which can be tailored to your specific needs, diagnosis, or preferred therapeutic modality
✨ Engage in hobbies, activities, and meaningful time with supportive friends or family members
✨ Explore local PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) or IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) options that provide group therapy, individual therapy, and medication management

Please remember: you are not alone, and your life matters. Reaching out for help is never a setback or a failure — it is a sign of strength. There are professionals and support systems ready to help you through difficult moments 🫶🏻 by @emillyduffley

YEAR TWO 🤍 Beyond thankful & honored to have spent another season with this team! The growth we’ve shown from last year to now is immense, and I only know that we will continue to go up from here. Couldn’t have asked for a better group of seniors to lead the way - your presence will be missed more than you know. Don’t count us out, UMB is on the rise! #gobeacs by @emillyduffley
