Meet this year’s Nature Photography Grant recipient ✨ Danish photographer Emil Ryge has spent over a decade documenting Amager Fælled — a nature reserve in Copenhagen that is home to rare species, yet under constant threat from urban development and competing economic interests. He is now awarded the Hasselblad Foundation Nature Photography Grant for his project *The Common*. We are thrilled to present the second issue of our photographic journal ‘New Danish Photography 02’, featuring series by @andersbirger, @michella_bredahl, @frederikdanielsen, @peterfunch, @jon__bjarni, @fridag.lisa, @louherrche & @sarahhjuncker, @anne__lass, @lassebakmejlvang, @madsnissenphoto, @totenschlagerr and @christian_falck_wolff. This new issue captures a moment of profound global and digital transformation. As traditional institutions falter and our digital lives are shaped by opaque algorithms and AI-generated content, this printed journal offers an act of resistance: real, human stories told through powerful photographic work. From intimate portraits to scenes of societal fracture, each series invites us to slow down, look closely, and reengage with a reality that still matters. We have gathered 12 photographic series, each unfolding in their own way moments that might offer a glimpse of understanding and meaning. These vastly different photographers represent a selection of what we think is the best and most vital photography in Denmark right now. New Danish Photography is established by @disko_bay_books, @spine_studio and @danskdokumentarisme and published every other year since 2023. The aim is to look beyond the dichotomy between art and documentary photography as a place to gain our bearings and take stock of Danish Photography right now. The book is a large screen printed OTA-bind softcover with a tip-in image on the back containing 256 pages with 177 plates in full color and a preface by @emilryge all beautifully designed by Spine Studio. Each series is twenty pages including an introduction of each project in Danish and English. Join us for the launch party in Copenhagen later today from 17.00-22.00 for beers, music and books in our new studio and soon to be bookshop at Hørsholmsgade 24, Nørrebro. “If we are to continue producing world-class photojournalism in the long run, we need to address the financial side. Both in terms of the payments from media outlets and the possibility of securing funding from other sources. If everything said here today is not just empty speeches—if we truly believe it is important to document our time—then we cannot leave that task to people who do it in their spare time, on weekends, or simply because they "can't help themselves" or "think it’s important.”” This Friday, I was recently asked to present an award at the Danish Picture of the Year competition. Besides congratulating the winner of Photographer of the Year, Christian Falck Wolff, I took the opportunity to say a few very about the dire state of the economy of freelance photojournalism in Denmark. The Minister of Culture was in attendance and accepted my invitation to have a meeting and explain these problems to him. I’m really looking forward to that meeting being held. @sofiabusk @kasperloftgaard og jeg har haft en kronik i Berlingske om vigtigheden af troværdig fotojournalistikken i en tid, hvor billedet mister sin sandhedsværdi og AI og misinformation fylder internettet. Medieforhandlingerne er i fulde gang og vi håber virkelig, at @zenia.stampe @leilastockmarr @charlottemolbaek @philipvivetrv @hellebonnesen og alle de andre husker på fotojournalistikken, når de skal lande en aftale. I recently spent a day roadtripping to Fyn with my dear friend @fridag.lisa and brought along my camera. Frida was visiting the workshop of artist and sculptor Jens Ingvard Hansen, who has been helping Frida make a series of bronze sculptures. Also helping is a couple of volunteers - including my dad in the blue shirt :) Frida is incredible and so is her work. I highly encourage you to check it out, if you haven't already. Før årsskiftet fik jeg en interessant mail fra @realdaniadk , som inviterede mig til at give et bud på en opgave. I forbindelse med deres 25-års jubilæum var de i gang med at opføre 150 træhuse til 150 forskellige fællesskaber rundt omkring i hele landet. Projektet hedder @voressted_realdania , og jeg endte med at bruge en betragtelig del af foråret på at køre 5.000 km. rundt i Danmark for at fotografere 25 vidt forskellige fællesskaber. Kroket-spillende pensionister i Nordjylland, muslingedyrkere i Faaborg, mountainbikere på Falster, biavlere, skolebørn. Og en hel masse ting derimellem. Når man læser nyheder, kan det godt være svært at se igennem alle de dårlige ting; krige, klimakrise, AI-kaos osv. Men samtidig er det helt utroligt livsbekræftende at erfare, at der i alle ender af landet er ildsjæle, som stille og roligt arbejder på at gøre deres lokalområde til et bedre sted at leve. Samtidig har det været en utrolig spændende udfordring, rent fagligt. Det kræver et godt greb om bådfe kalender og geografi at omsætte et regneark med 25 adresser og 25 kontaktpersoner, spredt ud over alle ender af landet, til en række fotoaftaler, som skulle eksekveres inden for et par måneder :) En stor tak herfra til hele holdet hos Realdania, de gode grafikere hos @snild.studio , og til alle de mange mennesker, som satte tid af og åbnede deres døre over hele landet. Tilbage i oktober 2024 fotograferede jeg Elise Sydendal, da hun samme med 10 andre sultestrejkede foran Christiansborg i forbindelse med forhandlingerne om Den Grønne Trepart. I går blev hun så valgt til Folketinget som en del af @jordskred_org , en organisation som arbejder på at få klimabevægelserne ind på Christiansborg. Det fylder mig med håb, når unge med hjertet på det rette sted lykkedes med de her ting. Og jeg er helt på halen over, hvor seje de er. Det må have været et vanvittigt hårdt arbejde at nå hertil. @elisesydendal by @hasselbladfoundation
