On Friday, 9 October, South African visual activist Zanele Muholi received the 2026 Hasselblad Award in Gothenburg, Sweden, one of the most prestigious international honours in photography.

The celebrations included a preview of Muholi’s major solo exhibition at the Hasselblad Center, attended by HRH Prince Daniel of Sweden, Patron of the Hasselblad Foundation, and fellow Hasselblad Award laureate Ingrid Pollard. The exhibition is now open to the public until 4 April 2027.

In their acceptance speech, Muholi reflected on the significance of this recognition for Queer communities, particularly those who continue to face discrimination, violence and erasure across Africa:

“This is not about me, this is not for me, this is for all of us.”

The honour comes as Muholi marks 20 years of ‘Faces and Phases’, the landmark portrait project that has grown from its beginnings in South Africa into an expansive, living archive of Black LGBTQIA+ lives across the world. The award recognises both Muholi’s extraordinary contribution to photography and the enduring social and political significance of their work as a visual activist.

The programme continues on Tuesday, 13 October, with an artist talk at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, coinciding with Muholi’s development of a new local chapter of ‘Faces and Phases’.

For Southern Guild, it is especially meaningful to witness this recognition of a practice that has insisted, for more than two decades, that these lives and histories belong within the history of photography.

Our heartfelt congratulations to Muholi on this extraordinary achievement!

Välkommen in!

“SEEING IS NOT ENOUGH.” – PROF. ZANELE MUHOLI

📍 Gothenburg, Sweden | 8 October 2026

A day of reflection, dialogue and musical celebration marked the recognition of Prof. Zanele Muholi as the 2026 Hasselblad Award laureate.

The day began with the Hasselblad Award Seminar, Mechanisms of Exclusion, at the University of Gothenburg. Featuring Muholi alongside Mark Sealy, Jonelle Twum, Frida Stranne and Sten Tolgfors, with Amat Levin as moderator, the discussions explored representation, democracy, institutional exclusion and the power of photography in shaping collective memory.

During their artist talk, Muholi reflected on family, community, education and the importance of creating opportunities through initiatives such as PhotoXP.

“Allow others to speak, and listen when others speak,” Muholi reminded the audience. Their words, “Don’t see your participants as subjects,” reinforced a photographic practice grounded in dignity, care and meaningful relationships.

Reflecting on the seminar, Dr. Lydia Plaatjies described an audience visibly moved by Muholi’s words, capturing the collective sentiment: “We see you, we hear you, we appreciate you.”

The evening continued at Gothenburg Concert Hall with a special Hasselblad Concert by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kent Nagano and featuring pianist Rudolf Buchbinder.

For the Muholi Art Institute, these moments represent more than individual recognition. They honour the communities, relationships and collective histories at the heart of Muholi’s work, and their enduring commitment to documenting Black LGBTQIA+ lives.

Our sincere appreciation to the Hasselblad Foundation, the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland, the University of Gothenburg and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for their collaboration in bringing these meaningful engagements together.

Yancey Richardson congratulates Zanele Muholi on receiving the 2026 Hasselblad Award. Muholi will be celebrated with a major solo exhibition at Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg, Sweden, alongside a catalog and program of public events.

One of the most influential contemporary photographers, Zanele Muholi has paved new ground in their use of photography in visual activism, claiming visibility, dignity and respect for Black queer subjects. Their long-term portrait series “Faces and Phases (2006 –)” and “Somnyama Ngonyama” are recognized as seminal bodies of work in the history of the medium.

Muholi’s work is central to contemporary debates on race, representation, activism, and human rights. They have been foundational for a new generation of queer and Black photographers and inspire emerging artists to work politically, ethically, and with community engagement.

“This prize is not mine alone. I carry it with the many faces, names, and histories that have trusted me with their stories. From Umlazi to every space where Black LGBTQIA+ people continue to fight to exist freely, this recognition affirms that our lives are worthy of being seen – not as statistics, not as shadows, but as full human beings. For years, my work has been about visibility and resistance. It has been about creating an archive so that no one can say, ‘We did not know.’ When this honor comes, I receive it on behalf of my community; those who have been erased, those who are still here, and those who are yet to see themselves reflected with dignity.”
 – Zanele Muholi

Thank you to Zanele Muholi, Sten Tolgfors, Mark Sealy, Frida Stranne and Jonelle Twum, and our moderator Amat Levin, for an inspiring Hasselblad Award Seminar.

Under the theme The Mechanisms of Exclusion – Conversations across Art, Democracy and Science, we explored whose stories are seen, whose voices are heard, and how exclusion shapes our societies. A morning that reminded us to challenge established perspectives and reflect on how we can make room for more voices.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these conversations possible!
