South African photographer and visual activist Zanele Muholi in conversation with Astrid Birnbaum, recorded in Stockholm inside Faces and Phases: The Stockholm Edition at Eva Livijn’s Art Space, curated by Ulrika Flink .

For Zanele, receiving the 2026 Hasselblad Award is also recognition of the communities whose lives and stories have shaped their work. The conversation traces an artistic journey rooted in life under apartheid, activism, personal and collective loss, and the importance of representation on one's own terms.

Zanele reflects on the evolution of Faces and Phases, collaborations with Black Queer Sweden, and Somnyama Ngonyama, a powerful body of self-portraits exploring identity, ancestry, language and healing.

They also challenge conventional ideas of where art belongs, reflecting on the intimacy of exhibiting in a private home and the importance of creating spaces where people feel safe, respected and seen.

On Friday, 9 October, South African visual activist Zanele Muholi received the 2026 Hasselblad Award in Gothenburg, Sweden, one of the most prestigious international honours in photography.

The celebrations included a preview of Muholi’s major solo exhibition at the Hasselblad Center, attended by HRH Prince Daniel of Sweden, Patron of the Hasselblad Foundation, and fellow Hasselblad Award laureate Ingrid Pollard. The exhibition is now open to the public until 4 April 2027.

In their acceptance speech, Muholi reflected on the significance of this recognition for Queer communities, particularly those who continue to face discrimination, violence and erasure across Africa:

“This is not about me, this is not for me, this is for all of us.”

The honour comes as Muholi marks 20 years of ‘Faces and Phases’, the landmark portrait project that has grown from its beginnings in South Africa into an expansive, living archive of Black LGBTQIA+ lives across the world. The award recognises both Muholi’s extraordinary contribution to photography and the enduring social and political significance of their work as a visual activist.

The programme continues on Tuesday, 13 October, with an artist talk at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, coinciding with Muholi’s development of a new local chapter of ‘Faces and Phases’.

For Southern Guild, it is especially meaningful to witness this recognition of a practice that has insisted, for more than two decades, that these lives and histories belong within the history of photography.

Our heartfelt congratulations to Muholi on this extraordinary achievement!
