This weekend we gathered to celebrate Mary. 🤍

Losing a sister is so hard. It’s crazy that a whole year has passed. And while life continues to move quickly, we all realize we are so lucky that she left behind a legacy that will always remain with us.

Almost a year to the date of her passing, we were able to unveil the Otsego Story Project, a community-led effort to document and amplify the lived experiences of Otsego residents, past and present. Many of the stories shared reflect health outcomes residents believe are connected to contamination in our community, and many more stories are still to come.

The project, a collaboration between the Toxic Action Lab and Justice for Otsego, was a vision Mary originally helped shape. Seeing it come to life this weekend was so special. Mary lived large and cared so deeply, and we know she was looking down with so much pride.

We miss her every day and will continue to fulfill the promise we made…to carry her memory and her mission forward. 🤍

Thank you for all of the birthday calls, messages and texts - I definitely felt the love near and far!🤍

And a special thank you to Mike for planning the most amazing trip to Paris to celebrate my 50th. We packed so much in…it really was the perfect way to ring in this milestone! 🇫🇷

This past year - filled with both grief and moments of joy - taught me a lot…but mostly this ⤵️

❤️Getting older is a gift.

❤️Quality time with the people you love is priceless.

❤️ The greatest wealth will always be health — take care of yourself. Schedule the annual checks. Practice self-care. Prioritizing your needs is an act of love.

❤️And of course… don’t sweat the small stuff. (There comes a point when you realize so much of it really is small.)

Here’s to 50 years of memories...and hopefully 50 more!

4 YEAR Milestone

December 14th marked four years since my double mastectomy, and I can’t believe the day came and went without it even crossing my mind.

I share this because when I was first diagnosed, I couldn’t imagine a day—or even an hour—going by without the worry and heaviness of cancer crossing my mind. But as time has passed, I’m happy to report that it’s no longer the first thing I think of in the morning…or even the last.

Don’t get me wrong…the fear of recurrence still pops
up from time to time, but I want to share (especially for those who are newly diagnosed), that days, even weeks, can go by without me thinking about it.

Survivorship is complex. Add grief into the mix, and it becomes even more layered. It feels strange to celebrate my health while simultaneously missing my sister so much…yet here I am, feeling grateful and optimistic alongside so many other emotions at the same time.

It’s the 1st of the month…but not just any month.

It’s October which inevitably means your feed is about to be flooded with PINK and posts about breast cancer awareness.

I’ll be honest, as a survivor, I have a complicated relationship with this month.

For a long time it was triggering…a reminder of all I have been through...but over the past few years, I’ve softened.

(Pink-washing aside), I’m learning to be ok with it…because if seeing the all of the pink ribbons and posts gives you the nudge (like it did for me back in 2021) to schedule a routine mammogram…that’s a win in my book!

I’ve always been proactive with my health but that particular year (2021), I kept pushing off making the appointment.

I was healthy, I felt great, I didn’t feel a lump and LIFE WAS BUSY, but because it was October and pink was EVERYWHERE, I was constantly being reminded to schedule a mammogram.

I did and I was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma.

Scary news to hear…but one thing is for sure, I’m beyond grateful I MADE THE APPOINTMENT and caught it early…had I not, my outcome could have been very different.

And so that brings me to my PSA for anyone over 40 or anyone at high risk…when you see pink plastered everywhere this month, please use it as a reminder to schedule your mammogram AND do monthly self checks.

Don’t put it off another day because health is the greatest wealth and early detection really does save lives. 🫶🏼
