I hope the “don’t train for numbers, train for feelings” crowd appreciates this..

I finally don’t care about the number. My whole thing right now is training to feel hot.  Strong. Capable. In my body. In my element.

The aesthetics are fun. Apnea cycling and equalization training is absolutely not.

I hope you are building the version of yourself you are obsessed with. The one you will grow old with.

Well, the first whales of my season reset the fkn bar. I can honestly say these have been my greatest moments in the water with whales.
This particular encounter with a humpback whale calf was total insanity

This 2000 pound humpback calf wanted to rough house.

Over and over again the baby came at us with no fear or boundaries.

We had to keep retreating to prevent from being crushes and to maintain the property distances.

Mom hung out in the background, peacefully watching her baby explore.

The regulations are no closer than 15m while in the water…

But baby whales don’t abide by human laws.
They’re only governed by their curiosity
And ruled by the drive to make their bodies as strong and fit as possible.

I think a lifetime spent training myself in the water as a child snorkeling on my own, competing and training in Freediving in my thirties,
And working these many years in the water as a professional photographer
Honed my body and my heart for these moments.

Friends Trip in Moorea 🌊

Doing things a little differently for this one.

My friend @kashchan and I are putting together a relaxed friends trip for swimming with whales in Moorea, French Polynesia. The idea isn’t a full-on @wildtidecrew expedition or structured retreat. It’s a small group of experienced ocean lovers who are comfortable with long seafari days and want to share time on the water together.

An unforgettable look in the blue. Captured here in Baja California, this was my first time in the water with silky sharks, despite the fact they were frequent visitors where I worked in South Africa. I’ve been waiting so long to meet them.

Silky sharks or “piloto” lived up to their reputation for being curious and inquisitive sharks.

The moment, this shot, and this experience is all the result of exquisite collaboration and sharing between myself and a boat of other ocean artist.

I took the initial shot, while @rafa.mesquita nailed this exquisite capture of footage.

@Underwater_hadrien masterfully taught me how to colorgrade the footage. What he taught me and listening to him explain his thought process blew my mind.

Sharing the boat with other artists is such a profound opportunity for learning for me. I felt just blessed in three important aspect of my life- underwater witnessing the swirling dance of Mobula Mobular while on seafari, topside sharing joy and stories and opinions in the boat with incredible humans, and in the editing room being schooled by one of the most innovative artists

Meet my rejects. The truth is that these were not originally photos I considered almost perfect…. they are photos from Baja that I almost binned!

When I first shot them, I passed right over them. But going back through the archives with fresh eyes, I see them completely differently now. In fact, I consider them as close to reliving these magic moments as I can get.

Without returning to Baja, of course.
Can’t wait to be back to this magical place and showing people all there is there. by @emilydives

The manta show never disappoints. A midnight ballet of giants dance through the light as they feed on plankton clouds.

What you see here actually is a feeding behavior, called “barrel rolls.”

The “barrel roll” (or somersault) is actually one of the most efficient ways for a manta ray to eat. When you see them doing those graceful backflips under the lights, they aren’t just showing off, they’re maximizing their “calories-per-flip” ratio.

Orcas in blue water. It’s the dream right? There’s few spaces in the world with the chance to see them. And you still need quite a bit of luck.

I’ll be leading groups in water with a permitted local guides for orcas open ocean seafaris & expeditions in Baja California Sur, Mexico in just a few weeks.

I’m happy to hear the new regulations that Mexico is enacting to protect interactions.

Sightings are never guarantee. As well, if we enter it’s always on their terms, with the utmost respect.
