Friends Trip in Moorea 🌊

Doing things a little differently for this one.

My friend @kashchan and I are putting together a relaxed friends trip for swimming with whales in Moorea, French Polynesia. The idea isn’t a full-on @wildtidecrew expedition or structured retreat. It’s a small group of experienced ocean lovers who are comfortable with long seafari days and want to share time on the water together.

The holidays are a time for gratitude. I’m grateful for the life I chose underwater.
Grateful for the people who shared it with me.

The sardines don’t stand a chance. Pelicans and frigate birds above, striped marlin, tuna, sea lions and whales below. Everybody’s hungry. An endless barrage from all sides that leaves only a few scales sinking to the depths.

Photographing feeding marlin is something that’s largely only possible in Magdalena Bay during the Mexican sardine run.

It’s a convergence of the baitball not moving too fast, the light aligning just right, and timing.

It also requires the right team. An experienced expedition leader ensures everyone in the water is working together. Things in the water happen quickly and it’s chaotic. Your expedition leader is there to guide you so the marlin are not disturbed while feeding and you can actually enjoy the show.

Just as important is the right captain. The wrong captain will have you chasing the wrong baitballs all day, burning time and energy with little to show for it.

Not all moments are a given.
They’re earned.

Choosing to teach freediving and lead expeditions never really felt like a choice. It felt like the only path that fit.
I tried to follow a narrower road many times. Advertising, sales, research. Every time I stepped onto a traditional route, I ended up back in the water.

The ocean has always been where I find my people, my sense of belonging, and my commitment to becoming better.
When you are on the right path, you just try your best and the rest follows.

@wildtidecrew is me fully taking that leap and forever shutting the door on a narrow path. grew from that truth. A life shaped by the water, the people it brings together, and the expeditions bring me back to myself. 🌊

The California sea lions cutting through the baitballs in Magdalena Bay during the Sardine Run is a masterclass in movement, dynamics, and negative space.
