a couple weeks to honor the season; pause our work, slow down, reflect, play, pray, say thank you and i love you, and be with the land and family and loved ones as we enter the new year. lovely reminders, especially from my siblings, of what’s important. thank you thank you thank you! i love you i love you i love you! by @emilykateseiter

we met at the tea kettle before sunrise and honored the farm’s noble silence while we shot these. the first few hours of the day set aside to meditate, move, sip tea, watch the sun come over the volcanos, swim in the lake, pray, smile at friends, express and create art, all without a word uttered. felt like a dance with @sxdierose 💞 by @emilykateseiter

my season of gratitude is a little different this time around because i learned the sanskrit word “aparigraha” this year. (i know the yamas can be interpreted and integrated so many different ways so if this word means something different or similar to you, please comment and tell me your thoughts!)

as i take note of what i am thankful for, i am surprised with the non-attachment i simultaneously feel for these things. it’s no coincidence that we celebrate gratitude in the same season as change. sensations, emotions, possessions, relationships, experiences, are all constantly coming and going and only fleeting in our everlasting existence. i’m grateful for those that i have been given the opportunity to love and care for and i hope i always give with the same love and tenderness that i receive.

i also want to acknowledge this season of loss i find myself surrounded by. one hand reaches out to my friends as they say goodbye to loved ones and one hand roots firmly to the earth, asking her to please take and alchemize this pain somehow. and then my little brother writes on the thanksgiving tree that he’s grateful for pain. he introduces me to this wonderful soul who reminds me to walk barefoot in the mud and maybe just be silent when someone dies. and then i stand in line at the grocery store on the friday before thanksgiving; kids stoked to be out of school, assigned friendsgiving recipes abandoned, bottles of wine traded, and the woman in front of me gets us all laughing at how silly her emergency grocery run uggs look with her party dress, hostess apron, and half-done hair. the clerk almost cracks a smile and i wonder if he is tired of his job or if his boyfriend is tired of him or if his dad is tired of chemo.

i feel my own hand on my heart before i even realize what i’m doing and then i’m so grateful for my practice. my breath. my body. this overstimulating grocery store. the food i’m buying. the house i’ll go home to. the list goes on and on, but most of the things i list won’t last as long as i do. and for that impermanence i am grateful too. 🌀 by @emilykateseiter

i keep hearing songs about grandmothers!! earlier this year i was in a room (more like a hut, “the om dome” to be specific) full of women and we went around the circle and introduced ourselves as the daughter of ____ who is the daughter of ____ as far back as we could name. my body was overcome with shakes and tears and to this day can’t really explain the emotion i experienced in that moment. right now, i just feel so grateful to have the guidance of my grandmothers, graunties, mother, and so many other women in my life as i take these steps. i wear sally’s jewelry every day as a reminder to trust my intuition, go after the work that inspires me, proudly stand up for what i believe in, get in trouble, and always hire women wherever i can :) taken in La Jolla, California by @emilykateseiter
