💥 New publication! “Why Reissue?” is the 3rd installment of my Alder & Frankia / @impracticallabor “Thinking What We Are Doing” essay series reflecting on making. This publication explores the thinking & motivation behind reissuing from archives, with contributions by fellow enthusiasts @faythelevine , @driftinglament , @_james_hoff , & Eric Parrish, plus the ideas of many other artists, writers, & theorists through time & space (including Bill Fay, the audio track here). 🚀 It launched this past weekend at NYABF, is now available on my website, & will be available at the Northampton Print & Book Fair in MA on Saturday October 10 @nohopbf — hope to see you there! In the meantime please allow me to introduce the book’s primary design feature: all images, captions, credits, & bibliography are hidden inside the folds, as they are in the archive: enjoy digging for them! 40 pages, French fold with orange staple, riso printed in orange, teal, & medium blue (once the teal broke in the middle of the run, as it does) right here in Storrs Mansfield, 500 copies, 2026. #publishingasartisticpractice by @emilylarned

Here at the Alder & Frankia / Impractical Labor table T15 at @printedmatter_artbookfairs #nyabf2026 for two more days! Today 10-7 and tomorrow 12-6. How do you make process visible? ILSSA Diagrams is an exhibition of diagrams of creative practices contributed by impractical laborers across the globe, on view one-weekend-only at @lookyheregreenfield in Greenfield, MA. The opening for this exhibiton, on Friday October 9 from 7–10pm, doubles as the pre-party for the 2026 Northampton Print & Book Fair, one of our most favorite fairs. Come hang out with @nohopbf exhibitors and organizers, bring zines to help pollinate the NPBF free zine rack, and grab NPBF merch featuring artwork by Looky Here’s own Hannah Brookman!

Come early to diagram your own creative practice! ILSSA’s @emilylarned will be offering a free, drop-in diagramming workshop on Friday October 9 from 5:30–7pm at Looky Here, 28 Chapman St, Greenfield, MA.

Be sure to visit the Northampton Print & Book Fair the next day on Saturday October 10 from 11–5 at 33 Hawley in downtown Northampton, and stop by the Impractical Labor / Alder & Frankia table! The ILSSA Diagrams exhibition will remain open for viewing on Saturday October 10 at Looky Here from 12–5pm.

It is out!!! 🥳🥳🥳 The Chinese-English bilingual edition of “Our daily lives have to be a satisfaction in themselves: 40 years of Bloodroot” published by the amazing Shanghai-based @51personaeproject ! Publisher Chen Yun reports that the book didn’t pass censorship so cannot be sold in stores in China, but is making its way in “a slow but interesting circulation like any of our other projects.” 💛 lmk if you spot a copy in the wild — they printed twice as many as I did. Can’t wait to give Noel Furie her copy. ✨✨✨Thanks to all of you who have supported this book and given it a much larger life than I could ever have imagined… by @emilylarned

In addition to teaching studio skills such as papermaking, printmaking, and book arts, Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) has offered workshops that are more experimental, personal, conceptual, or exploratory in nature, rooted in self-observation, inquiry, listening, embodiment, performance, study, and dreams.

Here in this publication are a few in their original form as they were published in WSW newsletters and Summer Art Institute catalogs from 1983–1999.

Efemmera Reissue No. 8: Workshopping at WSW was created by Emily Larned as part of her exhibition Workshopping, installed at Women’s Studio Workshop from October 3, 2025 – January 23, 2026, Rosendale, NY, curated by WSW archivist Faythe Levine.

Hello Vancouver! Headed to the UBC archives & special collections this morning and while waiting for a breakfast spot to open wandered into the lovely Jim Everett Memorial Park, such a special place. The Clark will be offering a range of free artist-book-related programming this day, including the Book Expo (the art book fair); a curator-led tour of the amazing-looking exhibition Raffaella della Olga: Typescripts, a pop-up exhibition in the Clark Library of unconventional mark making in artists’ books, bookmaking studio activities, and a talk with Lucy Ives from 3-4 who will discuss “the ways in which artists’ books reconfigure reading, literacy, and how we value, handle, and spend time with books.” Worth a trip, no? @clarkart by @emilylarned
