Idk about yall but coming out of the holiday season always makes me reflect on the dynamic sounds of Consumerism In America ✨🤑🇺🇸

This song’s based on Lynn Emanuel’s poem “The Planet Krypton” - about someone watching a televised nuclear test in the Nevada desert (best guess is Charlie in 1952). Rather than remembered violence from the very recent World War, & the potential for catastrophic devastation that the developing technology holds, the speaker imagines personal possibilities in the rich economic landscape of the era ushered in alongside the WMD.

One of my fave lines from the poem is “in the suave, brilliant wattage of the bomb, we were not poor”. In 12 words it captures one of the crucial points of tension in mid-century America (& always, everywhere): distant suffering slips out of focus for the immediacy of my own circumstances. I imagine the speaker as a teenage girl - not a monster for her lack of empathy but pretty normal, deeply wanting things that have been out of reach but which might now become attainable.
