Every project starts with the same question: How do we want this home to feel?

For this Dunthorpe remodel, the answer was warm, playful, and made to be lived in.

Our clients, creatives themselves, brought bold ideas to the process including a Mondrian-inspired built-in.

Together, we leaned into color blocking, soft curves, rich wood tones, and thoughtful details to create a home that feels unmistakably theirs.

The best homes aren’t the ones that demand attention. They’re the ones that couldn’t belong to anyone else.

📣A moment to reintroduce ourselves. Hi! I’m Sarah Westhusing, owner and principal designer at House of Milo. My husband and I fled the city life for a more casual outdoor lifestyle in Bend in 2016. My interest in interior design was peaked while looking for a home to purchase in Bend. Every home we looked at lacked soul and personality. I knew the only way to find a home we loved & that was truly us was to create it. WIth a background in product development & merchandising from Nike/Hydro Flask, the design process to create a shoe vs. a home follow a relatively similar process. Fortunately, my father is a contractor/builder. For the first 2 years he mentored me, working alongside me on projects. Learning to translate my design vision into reality from a builder’s standpoint, with his expertise, was an invaluable on-the-job learning experience.

If you haven’t already, meet Emily—my design partner in crime. With her Interior Design degree from Oregon State, we joined forces three years ago. Together, we tackle every project that comes our way, from furniture sourcing trips and drafting sessions to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the business running. We like to say we work together at the intersection where science and the arts meet each other. She pushes conventional boundaries, drawing inspiration from diverse sources — from fashion, personal experiences in how people live in their home, and travel. Her signature style incorporates unexpected material combinations, dynamic color palettes, and thoughtful spatial arrangements that invite clients engagement.

A House of Milo project on the cover of Bend Home + Design! This project was truly a collaboration between House of Milo & the homeowners as they love design as much as I do. ⁠
⁠
“One of the things the homeowners loved most about the house was also the biggest challenge. The main living space, which includes the kitchen, was one big, open loft-like room and double height windows. It was very undefined. ⁠
⁠
We ended up pitching the idea of a Japanese-inspired vertical-slat screen wall in the entryway. It gives the homeowners a place to great guests and provides visitors an obvious spot to put shoes and coats.”⁠

This project will definitely go down as one of my favorites as it truly felt we nailed the formula of 1+1=3. ⁠
