you know i had to double it 😝

It’s such a bittersweet feeling to know I’ll be graduating with a B.A. in Speech-Language Pathology and Asian American Studies from Fresno State tomorrow ₊˚⊹ᰔ This accomplishment was mended and nurtured by the wise insights and empathetic encouragements of my people — my friends, mentors, parents, siblings, and partner ( ˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈♡) Thank you to the Smittcamp Family Honors College for awarding me with a full-ride scholarship that allowed me to bloom without worrying about finances, the Richter Center for gifting me the tools to connect with the Fresno community and fellow student leaders, Women’s Alliance for creating opportunities to lead and engage with others to enact change, and HmSA for showing me the courage to continue speaking up for marginalized communities alongside other Hmong students.

It is such a privilege to be able to obtain an education as a Hmong woman, but I hope that one day — from the efforts of myself and others — that education can one day be a guaranteed right for all of us. This degree stands as an homage to the Hmong women who have redefined what it means to be a woman of color navigating higher education — the ones with the courage to make their presence known in spaces primarily comprised of men and white people. It is also an homage to the Hmong women who do not have the opportunity to pursue a life outside of motherhood and domestic duties — the ones who devote their lives to caring for others as the backbones of their households. Being surrounded by such a vibrant community of other Hmong women for the past few years has shown me that we are more than capable of being scholars, researchers, and advocates.

Here’s to fighting the patriarchy and white supremacy alongside my #community

Stay tuned for a graduation post again in a few years; by then I’ll have two extra letters in front of my name (^з^)-☆ by @emilyvanq
