Ways to support families in Palestine

Our mutual aid fund is still running sending weekly koha to more than 70+ families trying to survive in Gaza.

There are two ways to donate

- the Xmas Appeal is still open on chuffed (link in bio)

- or you can donate direct to:

Account Name: Prosean Pictures
Bank Account: 06-0574-0906928-00

Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Israel’s ban on charities being allowed to operate in Gaza means families are still in desperate need.

Even $1 helps.

As parents, from the day our first child was born, my husband and I have had to be part of the health system.

Our eldest has had many, many surgeries. His most recent was last year. He’s had two hospitalisations this year.

I can tell you - ED and the wards have never been worse. Last year he was accidentally given too much medication in ED because it was so hectic.

Last year, for the first time in 13 years I called in the paeds team into ED from my phone to treat my son because I was so concerned about his care.

It was not the fault of the nurses - but when you’re desperately understaffed, desperately under resourced, and desperately overworked - mistakes happen. And mistakes are happening.

I cried listening to the mum on RNZ talk about her child’s cancer treatment. My son was most medically fragile under another government. Health was not funded as it should have been then. But it’s so so so so much worse now. The hiring freeze is horrendous and there’s no transparency by this government around it.

Having a child who is medically fragile is terrifying. We should not be making it even harder for these brave kids and their parents.

Vote for these kids and vote for their parents. Vote green or labour and get these bastards out. by @emilywrites.public

I am passionate about graphic design and also passionate about making sure NZers who live overseas know how easy it is to vote!!!

Overseas NZers: did you know you can vote from anywhere, online, in about 15 minutes???

Voting papers can be downloaded from 21 October (nothing is posted out), and the vote needs to be uploaded by 7pm NZ time on 7 November.

Oi Vote is a non-partisan, volunteer-run site, which walks people through it step by step, including what to do if vote.nz says they’re not enrolled.

YOU HAVE TO RE-ENROL QUICK that’s super easy too.

It even has a ready-made message to send to a friend on WhatsApp.

Please vote and vote green 💚💚💚 by @emilywrites.public

Astonished that @bookheronz would say it’s an honour to host a man and party who has tried to destroy the creative industry in our country.

- $27m reduction in arts funding over four years in the last budget
- Just 10% of Creative NZ’s funding went to the South Island
- Creative NZ having to cut its own staff as well as massively reduce grants
- venues all over the country closing
- this government has funded already enormously wealthy musicians like Robbie Williams over local musicians leading to festivals and gigs that support nz artists being canned

So why in the ever loving fuck would you feel honoured to host the people doing that?

As a writer, as a reader, I would say respectfully: I’m not spending another cent with you while you provide a platform for policies that harm my community and the writers and artists and musicians I love. by @emilywrites.public

Once a year, for one night only, there’s an epic dance party - just for the girls, gays and theys. I went last year and it was so epic. So much fun. Just danced my butt off and my face hurt from smiling.

To go in the draw to win two tickets to Party Girl on 17 October in Lyall Bay, Wellington, drop a comment below with your favourite song to dance to. Winners will be drawn Thursday, 15th October. If you don’t want to risk missing out, buy your tickets on Humanitix 💃🪩🔥💋👠 by @emilywrites.public

Because I’m already getting messages-

Yes I’m really, really disappointed in the article interviewing the Head of Clinical Services at @diabetes_nz

Unfortunately even within diabetes services there are a lot of people with a stigma toward people with diabetes and intense fatphobia.

That’s because we live in a fatphobic society that demonises diabetic people.

Despite the evidence that diabetes is genetic - it’s just too tempting to shame fat people in a culture that hates fat people.

While I don’t have diabetes - I do have a child with diabetes and I have many friends with diabetes. Yes I don’t differentiate between the two which doesn’t make me very popular - because people want to separate diabetes into “the kind good people get” and “the kind bad people get”.

This is because of fatphobia. It’s that simple and devastating. Diabetes - no matter the kind - is horrific.

Stigma and shame impacts all diabetics - children like my son are told at 6 they shouldn’t have eaten so many lollies just as much as women in their 40s are told this. Neither is true. Both myths kill.

And let’s be clear - this is also about misogyny and racism. The examples used were women and they were not white women.

Because if this was a condition that impacted white thin women in their thousands then we would not see articles like this. White thin women would never be blamed en masse - never.

Since you’ll never see this covered properly in the media and we will always see fatphobia and racism and misogyny in diabetic services because there’s always fatphobia and racism and misogyny in medical services I’ll say this:

There are more than 150 gene variations linked to type 2 diabetes.

Epigenetic factors can modify the risk for developing type 2 diabetes - THEY CANNOT ERASE THE RISK.

You can do everything from diet to exercise and still develop diabetes. Not all people with an elevated risk of diabetes respond equally as well to different lifestyle changes.
As far back as 2025, we knew thanks to the Lyssenko, Groop, Prasad study that genetics were such a strong component that even which parent had the strongest genetic link impacted insulin resistance.
