Hi! I’m Emma Hurst - a politician, an animal rights activist and a vegan.

Animal rights activists belong in politics - in fact it is how we change we change the world.

As a child I thought I was different. I thought other people didn’t care about mice and insects and pigeons. When I was elected into Parliament to protect all animals I realised I am far from alone.

As an individual who left a DV situation, I fight for the rights of women and all DV survivors in Parliament. At that time, I had to rebuild my strength both inside and out - so I did some bodybuilding competitions and found my inner strength again.

I’ve worked in animal protection for many years and was a registered psychologist.

A few random facts about me at the end - and a shout out to all the kids in the 90’s who would have to call a number to find out where they were going that night - you know who you are 😉 by @emma.hurst

Designer puppies can cost $6000 or more, but the price being paid by mother dogs in puppy farms is infinitely worse.

It will cost her a life worth living.

We will outlaw puppy farming.

I asked AI what my strongest quotes are - and this was the result.

It’s grabbed what defines me. I want a world where women are empowered, animals are protected, and children are safe.

We must have the right to be safe. To be heard. To live free from violence.

And to everyone who keeps showing up, speaking out and demanding better: please know that together we are powerful - and we will change the whole damn world. by @emma.hurst

In recent days, businesses, public figures and politicians have been saying they have "zero tolerance" for domestic violence. For Alicia Little's family, those words should mean that a perpetrator's history doesn’t disappear at a state border.
ㅤ
Alicia, a 41-year-old mother of four from Kyneton, was killed in December 2017. Her family says her partner had a history of domestic violence in NSW, but when he moved to Victoria, none of that history followed him.
ㅤ
Now Tasmania is moving to create a public register of serial family violence offenders, and its proposed laws would let courts consider family violence convictions from any state. Alicia's aunt, Cindy Miller, has started a petition calling for greater co-operation between states, so a perpetrator's record follows them everywhere.
ㅤ
If you think a domestic violence history should follow perpetrators across state borders, you can read more and support the petition through the link in our bio.
ㅤ
If you or someone you know is affected by domestic violence, support is available through 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732.

My little Jes has passed away. 💔 It has taken me several weeks to write this because no words feel enough for him.

He was only days away from turning 21.

Behind this strong woman was a little boy who healed her heart and gave her a safe place to call home.

Jestar, I have all this love for you left here in this world and no place now to put it. You knew me by the things the world would never think to ask. And I knew you.

Looking after you was one of the greatest privileges of my life. I would do every little thing you needed all over again.

My precious boy. My sunshine. I hope you felt, every single day, how deeply your mummy loved you - and still does 💖 by @emma.hurst

1020 dogs dead in the greyhound racing industry.

My message to the Racing Minister after this exchange is this - 123 died of “illness or old age”.

What about the hundreds of others - how can the Government have a position that there is no upper limit, no amount of dogs killed too high that will force them to re-evaluate their position on greyhound racing?

So I repeat my question to the Minns Labor Government:

How many dogs killed is too many? by @emma.hurst

This is a reprieve, not the end of the fight.

Aerial shooting of brumbies has been called off for the remainder of this year. That means horses who may otherwise have been targeted from helicopters will, for now, be spared.

But aerial shooting is likely to start up again next year - so we must continue the fight.

So while today’s news is welcome, it is not enough.

We need long-term, humane options including genuine investment in fertility control and rehoming. There is no justifiable reason to continually opt for cruel lethal options.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to fight for these horses. We’ll keep fighting right beside you. by @emma.hurst

Should you have the right to know if someone you’re dating has a history of domestic violence or animal abuse?

I think you should.

I’m calling for a disclosure scheme in NSW that would allow people to find out whether a partner has a history of domestic violence — similar to Clare’s Law in the UK.

But given the well-established link between animal abuse and domestic violence, I believe animal abuse should be included too.

This isn’t being presented as a single solution to domestic violence. No one reform will fix the problem on its own.

It’s a protective measure — one part of the significant change and major funding we need in the domestic violence space.

And we need a Government interested and willing to do it.

Would you support a disclosure scheme like this in NSW? by @emma.hurst

WIN FOR ANIMALS! Late Thursday night we passed amendments to the Government’s Bill to make it easier to rent with animals.

Soon you won’t have to declare on a rental application that you have animals, and if a landlord unfairly refuses to allow an animal, the animal can remain with you at the property you are renting while you challenge the decision at the tribunal. One of our amendments also ensured that properties that genuinely can’t have animals for specific reasons need to be declared in the advertising of that property.

Everyone agreed with two of our amendments to the Bill - I mention this because it has taken a long time to get other politicians to actually ‘get it’ 😂 - almost 8 years to be exact. But no one objected to this sensible reform.

These changes will hopefully reduce the number of people experiencing homelessness with animals, animals being dumped in already full rescue centres and pounds, and assist people to leave violence if they have animals that also need safety. by @emma.hurst

Industries fight to keep animals as property under the law - did you know that affects domestic violence reforms?

An abuser can use an animal to threaten, intimidate or control their partner — yet someone leaving a domestic violence situation cannot apply for a custody order for their animal. They don’t exist because you can’t get protective-style custody for a “piece of property”.

Industries want to keep animals as property under the law so they can continue to abuse them. But it also means that we have a big loophole when it comes to people leaving violent situations with animals. This legal fiction of animals as property makes it harder for people to leave violence and many people remain in violent situations because of the difficulties associated with leaving with animals.

Industries that suppress domestic violence reforms should not be allowed to win this one. 3 women were killed just recently. Domestic violence reforms should be the priority - not industries that want to profit from animal abuse. by @emma.hurst

BREAKING: The Government has indicated support for laws we’ve been fighting for in the DV space.

Caitlin’s family waited five weeks to be able to hold her funeral.

While Caitlin’s mother Kylie was grieving the loss of her daughter, Caitlin’s former partner refused to release her body to her family.

Under the current law, a spouse or de facto partner can become the senior next of kin even where there are serious domestic violence concerns, allegations or even charges.

People assume our laws protect victims and their families in circumstances like this — they don’t.

That’s why we’re introducing Caitlin’s Law.

When a law causes harm, governments should fix it. And families grieving the loss of someone they love should never have to endure what Caitlin’s family did. by @emma.hurst
