Australian MP for the Animal Justice Party @emma.hurst speaking with Tara Moriarty on the speciesism within our society...

If animals can all experience pain and suffering, why does our definition of cruelty depend on the species? - @emma.hurst

Tara Moriarty is the Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Regional NSW and Minister for Western NSW, NSW Parliament, meaning she oversees the legislation on animal welfare in Australia.

Breaking: Our 9th Bill together just passed the NSW Parliament and Terramation is set to become law and available in NSW as a death care option in addition to burial and cremation.

Thank you to Emma Hurst MLC from the Animal Justice Party for leading the bill through the NSW Upper House.

As Emma said, all the bills we have worked on together have been for people, animals, and the environment and this bill ticks all three boxes.

Terramation is an additional death care option, alongside burials and cremation. It is a process that transforms a deceased person’s body into nutrient-rich soil through natural decomposition.

🚨 A major step forward for PII/homebirth advocacy in NSW!

Today, a motion led by Emma Hurst MLC @emma.hurst calling attention to the urgent need for a sustainable insurance solution for privately practising midwives attending homebirths was passed as formal business in the NSW Legislative Council.

In her speech, Emma highlighted the role of private midwives in delivering midwifery continuity of care and preserving choice of birth location, reflecting the recommendations of the NSW Birth Trauma Inquiry.

On behalf of ACM, Australia’s midwives, and the families we serve, we sincerely thank Emma for standing with the profession and advocating for a sustainable future for privately practising midwives.

👏 Please join us in thanking Emma Hurst for her leadership and support on this critical issue.

THANK YOU. ❤️
To everyone who stood beside us on Friday night to rally against the last ever Million Dollar Disgrace at Wentworth Park.

To every greyhound exploited, maimed and killed in this disgraceful industry, we will never stop fighting for you, and we will not rest until this gambling-fuelled, dog killing industry is shut down once and for all.

To our speakers, and all of the incredible humans who made their voices heard loud and clear on Friday night, thank you.

Together, we will end this industry.

We made history and now we will continue to make sure that greyhound racing ends everywhere not just at Wentworth Park. Emma Hurst is as determined as ever to make sure that it’s completely shut down in New South Wales. It’s time to bring back the ban on greyhound racing. ❤️🐶

In recent days, businesses, public figures and politicians have been saying they have "zero tolerance" for domestic violence. For Alicia Little's family, those words should mean that a perpetrator's history doesn’t disappear at a state border.
ㅤ
Alicia, a 41-year-old mother of four from Kyneton, was killed in December 2017. Her family says her partner had a history of domestic violence in NSW, but when he moved to Victoria, none of that history followed him.
ㅤ
Now Tasmania is moving to create a public register of serial family violence offenders, and its proposed laws would let courts consider family violence convictions from any state. Alicia's aunt, Cindy Miller, has started a petition calling for greater co-operation between states, so a perpetrator's record follows them everywhere.
ㅤ
If you think a domestic violence history should follow perpetrators across state borders, you can read more and support the petition through the link in our bio.
ㅤ
If you or someone you know is affected by domestic violence, support is available through 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732.

Today, I stood at NSW Parliament and heard the words I have fought so hard to hear.

Caitlin’s Law.

I cannot bring my beautiful daughter Caitlin back. Nothing will ever change that.

But if her name and her story can bring peace to other families, protect them from unnecessary trauma, and spare them the heartbreak of feeling like they have lost their loved one twice, then her legacy will mean something far greater than the pain that began this fight.

To victims of domestic and family violence — control will no longer continue beyond life.

To our Indigenous communities — may your cultural goodbyes, traditions and right to lay your loved ones to rest be respected and restored.

To foster children and children whose lives have been shaped by circumstances beyond their control — may you rest peacefully, surrounded by the people and the place where you truly belong.

And to every person who leaves this world — may you be afforded the dignity, respect and peace you deserve.

I am only one mum, but today I stand for so many.

My deepest thanks to Premier Chris Minns, Attorney General Michael Daley, Emma Hurst and Minister Jodie Harrison for the empathy, understanding and support you have shown throughout this journey.

To Change.org — thank you for your endless support, encouragement and advice, and for helping one mum’s voice become the voice of tens of thousands.

To every person who signed, shared, spoke up and stood beside me — this belongs to you too.

And to my family and friends: I love you. Without you, I would not be writing this today. Your love has carried me through the days I didn’t know how I could keep going.

But most importantly…

To my beautiful Caitlin Rose Thornton.

I couldn’t save you.
I couldn’t bring you home.

But I promised I would fight for you.

Your life mattered.
Your story mattered.
And your name will never be forgotten.

Today, my darling girl, I give you Caitlin’s Law. 💜

May your name now protect others in the way I wish I could have protected you.

This is Caitlin’s legacy.
Control does not continue beyond life.
