🎬 The Making of MANON!: PART 1

What happens when you take one of opera’s most iconic love stories and completely reimagine it?

For Heartbeat Opera, MANON! began with a question: What if Massenet’s classic could speak directly to us today?

A new English libretto. Fresh arrangements. A bold theatrical vision. And a cast ready to throw themselves into it.

This is where MANON! began.

🎧 Available August 14th on all streaming platforms!

✨ COVER REVEAL ✨

The wait is almost over...

We’re thrilled to unveil the cover art for MANON! — the Official Original Cast Recording of Heartbeat Opera’s groundbreaking reimagining of Massenet’s masterpiece, arriving August 14 on Lexicon Classics.

The debut music release from Heartbeat Opera, a group that has “already contributed more to opera’s vitality than most major American companies” (The New York Times), MANON! transforms Jules Massenet’s classic tale of love, glamour, and reinvention into a dazzling new musical theatre-infused adaptation. With a saucy new English-language book and lyrics by Jacob Ashworth and Rory Pelsue and luscious new arrangements by Dan Schlosberg, who conducts from the piano, this Original Cast Recording preserves Heartbeat Opera’s “categorically imaginative and radical” (The New Yorker) approach to classic opera for the first time ever. Featuring an electrifying cast with Emma Grimsley as Manon, Matt Dengler, Glenn Seven Allen, Jamari Darling, Justin Lee Miller, Katy McCreary, and Natalie Walker, MANON! blurs the line between opera and Broadway like never before.

Experience the recording that captures every unforgettable moment of this revolutionary production.

🎧 Available everywhere August 14.
Pre-save details coming soon.

Back in April, we went into the studio at @powerstationatberkleenyc for three days to make a record with @lexiconclassics and capture all the genre-bending, freshly translated magic that was @heartbeat_opera ’s MANON!. It was pure bliss, and I’ll never ever be over it.

I first learned Manon’s Gavotte in college because the late great Phil Frohnmayer told me I should, and he used to sit in his chair and sing the ensemble bits himself when we worked on it. I feel him there every time I sing or hear this music.

I’ve got infinity sappy things left to say about all this. The collection of people who made it so — I love them with a ferocious madness. Keep an eye out for more tracks being released as singles, and the FULL ALBUM (ahhhhh!) comes out soon!

Anyway, first track is out TODAY! Go stream it wherever you stream things. ✨💖 by @emma_joyce

“But how I lived… How I lived…”✨

Bid adieu to that little table for the last time yesterday.
To spend these last weeks in 18th century Paris telling the most incredible story and singing the most magnificent music in the company of the *most* remarkable people — a dream, an honor, a joy beyond measure.

Prevost. Massenet. @rorypelsue . @danielschlosberg . @saragettelfinger . Jacob Ashworth. @heartbeat_opera . Genius abounds.

To be under the chandeliers with @justin.lee.miller and @_theamericantenor_ and @jamaridarling and the coven of coquettes that is @nwalks and @errybodyaintable and my dearest, boldest, bravest chevalier @mattdengler 💕 — they stole my whole heart.

And then there’s @bre_com and the most brilliant band and @christiandegrecardenas and @thenickattack and @nicoleredifer and beyond beyond beyond into infinity.

Manon: I’ve loved her for a long time. I’ll love her forever.

Congratulations, all. I’m in awe of you and the thing we made on Oxford Street.
