My dearest Jeffrey… This is news I wasn’t expecting to wake up to hear, I thought this day was a long way off, you seemed utterly invincible. Thank you for the brutal pep talks and writing advice, thank you for telling me I was unbelievably bossy and for telling my husband I reminded you of Margaret Thatcher, and thank you for your gift of storytelling. Your final novel is astonishing- as you quite rightly told me it would be before I’d even read it! I’m heartbroken you won’t see it fly around the world as it was always going to. You were one of the most generous people with your time, care and energy, an outrageous flirt, filled with mischief, a font of knowledge and an utterly devoted family man. Dearest Dame Mary, how you loved her and your boys and grandchildren. I will miss our banter and chats about politics, Lord Archer- which irritated you beyond measure when I called you that. The saying be careful what you wish for is soooo true! Inside a writer’s world….. I’ve been awaiting my edits on book six and I knew they’d be meaty because I’ve written a complex and ambitious novel. (Out May 2027 and terrifyingly available for pre-order!) 💙🇬🇷🙏 However, this is the longest editor’s letter I’ve received- but, I was prepared for it. ✉️ ✉️✉️✉️ The rewriting and re-jigging of moments will be many- I was expecting them as my gut told me things may be in the wrong place. ✍️✍️✍️✍️ And the addition of a character I suspected needed to be written instead of being referred to does, indeed, need to occur. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’ve written the right book, not necessarily in the right order!! 🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹 There is a growth that comes in learning to trust your gut and then there’s the reality of the real adulting lesson….. when someone agrees with you about what is wrong and then lovingly wishes you God speed as you go off and work out how to make it right! 😂😂😂 BUT they trust you to find your way and offer support and guidance should you need it, though they already believe in you when you don’t have such assuredness. That is the mark of a brilliant editor and I’m lucky enough to be working with one.🌸 ✨💙🇬🇷 I’m so excited to tell this story, I simply need to revisit how I’ve done it and then, make it better. 📚📚📚 So…. I will be quieter on here- aside from random sunsets and animal pics on stories, but I’m still around. Don’t be a stranger! The changing skies of September. ☀️💙 August ended with pale, wan sunsets and a humid kiss goodnight. Now… as the quiet signals of autumn gently creep forwards, the sky finds its own drama, the cicada song lessons and the crickets strike up their noisy band to welcome in the darkness. Occasions moments of chilliness arrive with acclimatisation- despite it being 29 degrees at midnight, ✨ But a new season of fruit and produce tempt and delight as Greece relentlessly yields its inimitable gifts. Holding my debut novel in the place where I set it is a magical thing that still feels unbelievable. But, there is a naivety about my choice to set it in Methoni and then tinker with the geography, blending a couple of nearby villages and towns with this beautiful place. 🇬🇷 I never expected to have a second, let alone a fifth novel published and so, what would I do differently now? 💙 I wouldn’t mess with the place. Though some locals say I still captured the spirit of Methoni despite saying you can see Pylos from there when I knew full well you couldn’t! But I didn’t expect to be published in Greek, let alone be blessed enough to sell tens of thousands of copies of my first book in English. So, I apologise on behalf of my silly self from 2020, writing with only a dream, moderate delusion and a simple story in mind. 💙 I would protect my heart more. Pouring every ounce of emotion into a book doesn’t guarantee success, but it does mean it’s personal. Yes, every novel I write is personal because I spend so much time with the characters, but this one had a fictionalised albeit real-life experience of losing my darling mum woven within the seams of the story. Real emotion doesn’t guarantee success, but it does guarantee resonance with readers who can relate to the issues raised in the novel. 💙 Aside from re-writing the whole thing, what else would I change? Nothing! Because this book set me on an unexpected path towards a dream and now I live in the place where I wrote it. All I can do is live, learn, laugh and write and do better with the next sentence I commit to the page. And remain grateful to Greece for the endless inspiration and to all of you who continue to help me reach for the stars.
