STACKING TUMBLERS

Two sizes, two kinds of drink.
The WASTED Stacking Tumblers come in two variations, designed around the character and volume of the drink they hold.

A compact tumbler for short, spirit-forward drinks, think a classic Negroni, served over a large cube of ice.

A larger tumbler for longer, more generous serves, perfect for a Bloody Mary, packed with ice and topped with all the necessary accompaniments.

But they’re not limited to cocktails. Tea, water, juice or whatever you’re drinking works just as well.
As with the rest of WASTED, the forms are influenced by Brutalist architecture, simple, weighty, structural forms translated into objects for everyday use.

Made from reclaimed clay and surplus studio glazes, each tumbler carries its own variations in colour, surface and texture.

THE APERITIF COUPE

The first object in the collection was the coupe.
Two sizes, two ways of drinking.
The smaller coupe is designed for shorter, more spirit-forward serves, the kind of drink where concentration and intensity matter. Think Dirty Martinis, Negronis served up, or a strong aperitif cocktail.
The larger coupe is designed for longer, colder and more diluted drinks, generous serves with plenty of ice, citrus and texture. Think frozen Daiquiris, Margaritas, or a bright, icy spritz-style cocktail.

The form became the starting point for the wider Wasted collection, leading into tumblers, carafes, dishes and vessels.
Stemming from a fascination with concrete Brutalist architecture the solid, architectural profile of the coupes takes cues from cast concrete columns, plinths and structural forms. Translating the visual language of Brutalism into something tactile and intimate: an object held in the hand.
This architectural influence runs throughout the WASTED collection, informing the proportions, silhouettes and sense of weight across the vessels.

WASTED

A collection made from what was left behind.
From Berries coffee shop, orange peels are being reused ingredients that might otherwise be discarded becoming part of something new.
At Henley Distillery, those overlooked ingredients become part of the process of making orange peel bringing flavour and character to their Negroni.

Reclaimed clay.
Surplus glaze.
Materials from the studio, gathered and transformed.
Nothing is quite the same twice.
Colours shift.
Surfaces change.
Forms move and evolve.
The material carries its own history and every piece carries a little of it with it.
Rather than hiding these differences,
WASTED makes them the point.
Objects shaped by what already existed. by @emmalouisepayne

WASTED
HENLEY DISTILLERY & BERRIES COFFEE SHOP
From Coffee shop waste Cocktail

Wasted began with a question about what happens when waste becomes the starting point rather than the end.

For Sense of Place, that idea extends beyond the ceramics.
Orange peel discarded by a local coffee shop has been collected and given a second life, becoming an ingredient in a limited-edition Negroni created with The Henley Distillery.

The peels are transformed into flavour, bringing something that would ordinarily be thrown away back into circulation.
The result is part of the exhibition’s Taste experience, where the ceramics are not simply displayed but activated through food, drink and hospitality.

Waste becomes material.
Material becomes flavour.
Flavour becomes part of the experience. by @emmalouisepayne

WASTE CLAY

The starting point for Wasted was the clay already sitting around the studio.
Clay that had been used, reclaimed, mixed, dried, processed and otherwise destined to become waste.

Rather than treating this material as something to be separated away from the “new” work, I began using it as the material for the collection itself.

The result is a group of objects where variation becomes part of the design.
The clay doesn't behave exactly the same way every time, and I don't want it to.
Each pieces varies depending on the batch of reclaimed clay uses. The glaze was collected over the year into coloured pots so we didn't really design or decide the colour. As the pieces shirk the type of clay can affect shrinkage rate resulting in size irregularities.

Impurities have become our perfections this collection. by @emmalouisepayne

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GET WASTED?

There are a few meanings.
There is the obvious one: waste.
Clay that is left over.
Glaze that has nowhere else to go.
Materials that have already been used.
Then there is the other kind of wasted.
A Negroni.
A long lunch.
An evening with friends.
A table that gets progressively messier as the night goes on.
Wasted sits somewhere between the two.
It takes materials that might otherwise be discarded and turns them into objects designed specifically for gathering, eating and drinking.
The collection asks whether waste has to be the end of a process, or whether it can be the beginning of something useful, beautiful and social.
A collection about material reuse, but also about enjoying what we make. by @emmalouisepayne

WASTED IS LIVE

Today Wasted launches as part of Sense of Place at Atelier Seventy Six.
A new collection of ceramic cocktail glasses, carafes, small dishes and vessels made from reclaimed clay, reprocessed ceramics and surplus studio glazes.

But Wasted is about more than what happens to leftover clay.
It is about what happens when waste becomes the starting point.
Waste clay.
Waste glaze.
Waste orange peel.

Materials that would usually mark the end of a process become the beginning of something new.
The collection is designed to be used, bringing together ceramics, food, drink and conversation through a collaboration with The Henley Distillery.

And now, after months of making, testing and reworking, Wasted is live and available to buy.

See the collection at Atelier Seventy Six or shop online at emmalouisepayne.com.

Getting wasted

There is more than one way to get Wasted.
For the new collection, I’ve been looking at what happens to the things left behind in the studio.
Waste clay, Reprocessed ceramics. Surplus glaze from projects and multiple glaze tests.

And now, with The Henley Distillery, waste orange peel from Berries coffee shop.

The project takes these overlooked materials and puts them back into circulation, turning them into ceramics, flavour and ultimately an excuse to gather around a table.

Wasted launches tomorrow at Atelier Seventy Six.

The collection will be available to buy online link in bio.
