Emma Hospelhorn is known as a flutist when she goes by her full name, especially as a member of Chicago’s @ensembledalniente; the acclaimed collective that brings experimental chamber music to the masses. But when she steps into the universe of her solo project, Em Spel, she writes and sings surreal, beguiling songs that fall somewhere in between dream pop, art rock, and folk music.

The multi-instrumentalist has a new album out, titled Bird or Snake, in which she occasionally breaches the constraints of tonality and uses layering techniques to texturize the organic elements that define her sound. The pandemic carved out enough space in Hospelhorn’s busy schedule for the creation of new Em Spel songs, some of which she performs live with her band for the latest episode of Soundcheck.

It's one month since this Dal Niente + AACM collaboration - still can't believe I got to be a part of this music making. Dee Alexander and Ben Lamar Gay each conducted mesmerizing new pieces they composed to a packed Elastic crowd <3

Bird or Snake is officially out today. Go order some vinyl off bandcamp or from your favorite record store. OR buy one in person from me at Constellation on April 11. Folks who pre-ordered vinyl, orders should ship today!

Stream the full anywhere but Spotify and buy a digital download on bandcamp if you're really enjoying it or, if like me, you have a dumbphone and you need to download your music.

Thanks so much to everyone involved in this project. You are the ocean to my sea wall. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @emmanat0r
