Still can’t believe I get to say this. I sent a bunch of messages to friends and family late Wednesday saying, ‘I WON THE THING!!’ No Country for Girls wins the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize 2023. Unbelievable.

As I said Wednesday night, this is for all the young women and girls out there who are unapologetically and uncompromisingly themselves whatever the world throws at them. Every time I read the article in the Bookseller I cry, because no one has summed up this book more beautifully than Niso Smith, describing it as ‘a story of young, female empowerment and resilience’. There’s no greater thing as an author than to have readers see your characters clearly. THANK YOU, prize readers, judges and everyone at the Wilbur and Niso Smith Foundation, for giving me exactly that. I will never forget it.

Thanks too to the people I forgot to thank Wednesday night while they were sitting right in front of me! Cal Kenny, Euan Thorneycroft and everyone at Sphere and @littlebrownbookgroup_uk, we did good.

This shortlist was, as others have said many times, incredibly strong. Please go out and read these books. They’ll transport you, thrill and educate you, have you on the edge of your seat, make you laugh, gasp, cry and everything in between. That’s what they’ve done for me.

Last but most crucial, No Country for Girls is an intersectional story. We had a devastating referendum result in Australia at the weekend, but the #yes23 campaign have so much to be proud of. I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands, waters and skies where this story is set, and where I live and work when I’m in Australia. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Every monster has a weakness.

At the height of Australian summer, a serial killer known as The Shark stalks a coastal suburb, hunting young female swimmers.

Afraid and furious at the failure of the police to protect them, two women fight back. Raych is grieving someone she'd have died to save, while Carmen hides her own disturbing connection to the murders.

What I did for my birthday — last few shows and recommended if you can get yourself a ticket. Staging, music, casting, all nailed it. I’m so invested in the myth of these two I’d follow them anywhere.

Loved our panel at Fatal Shore at Shoreham Wordfest last weekend.
